A blaze at the John A. Dunn chair factory on 197-199 Fortland Street drew two thirds of Boston’s fire department to the six story building. Workers escaped via rooftops and exits with some jumping to the adjacent roof. The fire began after 75 workers arrived and was controlled after four alarms. Losses were heavy.
Millinocket Maine December 9 The entire Great Northern Paper plant closed two weeks ago due to breath and pulp shortages began operating today leaving about 600 men idle previously back at work as production resumes.
Berlin December 9 The university extension movement has taken a strong hold of the University of Heidelberg. Henceforth professors will be allowed to hold lectures accessible to any adult person.

Dr Arthur H McCann a renowned Lowell veterinary surgeon was found dead in a dark chair at the St Charles hotel Middlesex street early this morning. Cause of death heart disease with officials noting heart failure. He visited the hotel office last night complaining of illness and rested in a small room between offices before dying. He leaves a wife Cora and a 14 year old daughter.
The French steamer Versailles reports 1100 Colombian troops landed from Cartagena near the Atrato river mouth to open a pass over the Darien mountains into Panama. Additional forces from Cauca and other regions are converging, with troops marching or awaiting Gen. Reyes's Washington mission outcome.

Massachusetts Gas Companies threatens consolidation of Boston gas firms under a new act, unless Receiver Pepper secures an injunction by tomorrow. The move would unite Boston, Brookline, Bay State, Roxbury, South Boston, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain Gas Light and Massachusetts Pipe-Line into one entity. Sherman L. Whipple, counsel for Receiver Pepper, vows to pursue court orders to block the sale and carry out the plan.

A fire on Sumner street in Lynn at 5 a m drove 22 people from a three story block in their night clothes. Mrs A B Noyes, lodging house owner, was rescued twice after being overcome while trying to save bank books. Fire caused $1500 damage to the building and $2500 in losses to tenants and shops. insured.
In New York on December 9 riders faced fatigue after a grueling six day race. C D Barclay rode with a broken left rib and severe bruising, refusing to quit to honor his contract while aided by doped relief and support from Franz Krebs. Rettich retired with Barclay at 6 30 am, leaving 12 teams. The 10 o clock standings list Contenet Breton leading at 1037.8 points with multiple teams close behind.

A six week old baby girl in New York has slept for two weeks straight. The infant appears healthy, feeds normally, and grows, but has not opened its eyes or spoken in fourteen days. The coma began after a high fever which has not recurred.
