Women in Court Cause of Death and Larceny Case

The police court heard cases on Mary McDermott's death with Kate Reed and Mary Flynn facing manslaughter charges and set for Dec 17 an inquest. Clarence Beville was tried for larceny amid testimony about missing diamonds and money from Aaron Somerville. Beville claimed the money and purchases were legitimate. witnesses described Beville's spending and connections to the Merrimack house and Talbot Clothing store. The proceedings continued with Beville remanded and the inquest date pending.

Queer Will Filed for Late Charley Hill Estate

Mrs Gertrude Driggs formerly of Dayton Ohio files in Los Angeles Superior Court an alleged will of Chas Hill alias Salem Charley who left 142000 in cash. Dated January 14 1888 the will leaves all real property money and personal effects to 15 year old actress Gertrude Driggs. The pencil document bears the signatures of a dead counterfeiter George Manning and N Driggs former husband. The Times notes Hill Driggs and another man were gang counterfeiters with Hill allegedly crafting the will as he left with the gang. Photos of Gertrude and a 10000 due bill in Hill s favor were filed with the will.

Trains Crash Across Regions Killing Several

In Youngstown Ohio a head on collision between a passenger train and local freight killed two engineers and four crew, injuring two others. In Tennessee five Italian laborers died and eleven were hurt in a Baker's Hill tunnel blast. In Missouri a Santa Fe California Limited wreck near Rothville claimed two engineer deaths and injured one passenger. derailment on an open switch caused the disaster.

Taxes In Maine Trust and Banking Firms Taxed

The board of state assessors committed the semi annual taxes on Maine trust and banking institutions totaling 11768.38 dollars, up from 10895.46 in June. Fire wrecks central Atlanta blocks in fierce blaze

A wind fueled a major fire in downtown Atlanta causing about 500000 dollars in damage. Thomas F. Cannon a 28 year old brakeman for the New York New Haven Hartford line was killed in Dedham yard when a car being sent back struck the caboose of a construction train.
