Senate Committee Drafts a Bill for Oklahoma Statehood
Washington reports the Senate committee on territories approved a substitute for the House statehood bill to admit a single state named Oklahoma from the present Oklahoma and Indian territories. The plan allows 120 delegates to a constitutional convention, bans polygamy, enables Indians to vote and be delegates, and sets federal oversight of Indian rights and debts. The measure passed 6 to 5 with all Republicans except Quay in favor and Democrats against. The full House adjourned at 2:35 p.m. until Friday.
