Washington August 26 John Anderson is to be hanged today for the murder on board the schooner Olive Pecker. The case drew wide attention and efforts were made to obtain a respite or commutation. The attorney general ruled against clemency and no Presidental respite would be granted.
In Buffalo on August 26 John Carrigan aged 60 was murdered in bed by his 90 year old son. The killer admits the act saying he could not endure his father's abuse of his mother whose arm was broken. The head was nearly severed by an axe.
The auxiliary cruiser Prairie with 400 Massachusetts naval militia troops ran ashore at Sandy beach near Amagansett L I at ten o’clock last night. Assistance arrived and all personnel are safe. Troops will be transferred by lighters to Montauk for evacuation.
The first five section train bearing the First Maine volunteers reached Boston this morning carrying 172 sick officers and men. One death was reported en route, Fred Hagerty of Company L Lewis ton, typhoid fever. Heat caused the sick to lose ground during the journey.
Reports from Bennington Vermont dated August 26 describe heavy damage from recent thunder storms. In 16 towns of the county, 23 farm barns filled with hay and grain were struck by lightning causing loss. Thirteen dwellings were struck and three burned.

Word from Rome confirms Mer Magennis, pastor of St Thomas Church Jamaica Plain, appointed domestic prelate by decree of the Pope. Born 1848 in Boston, he built churches in Jamaica Plain West Roxbury and Roslindale, brought Sisters of St Joseph, opened Leo XIII parochial school, and aided deaf and dumb children. He previously served as assistant at St Joseph Roxbury and was named pastor in 1868.
Miss Rachael Rosenfeldt of New York a noted society figure died in Portland after a sudden sneezing fit caused an artery rupture following a visit with friends and her fianc e actor William H. Pascoe. She endured hours of agony before death.
In a Tuesday night cyclone like storm, the Andover summer home of Henry M Ordway and family suffered severe damage. The barn was demolished, cattle killed or scattered, hens blown away, and the roof ripped off the house. Ordway was trapped briefly beneath a fallen beam but survived with injuries. Lowell residents aided the scene as the house housed mostly Lowell guests. No other nearby houses reported damage.
Leo Drury seven, son of Thomas Drury, drowned in the Concord river behind White's tannery Perry street yesterday after noon. He was watching bathers on a rock when he fell in as the current carried him under. Willie Evans aided his rescue but medical efforts by Dr Burnham failed. The body was taken to 15 Hudson street, home of the parents, who have three other children.
The mayor and buildings superintendent opened bids for boilers at Varnum and Highland schools. Lowell Boiler Works won Varnum at 670 dollars and Scannell & Whaley Highland at 830 dollars after other bids were rejected for unsigned guarantees.
Lieutenant William Tiffany of the 1st U. S. Vol. Cavalry Roosevelts Rough Riders died at the Parker House shortly before six tonight. He had been landed from the Olivette on Tuesday and was met by his brother Belmont Tiffany. Death followed a bout of fever after removal from the ship. Tiffany, 29, belonged to several Newark clubs.
A ramshackle wagon loaded with sawdust and branded C. A. Jackson halted at the police station after its driver pitched forward into the street. The horse was steadied and the wagon waited for a replacement wheel as onlookers watched the mishap unfold.
