Aug 24 Montauk Point L I A terrible thunder storm tore through the camp blowing down many soldiers tents including hospital tents. Secretary of War Alger Col Hecker Maj Hopkins arrived and planned a mine sinking in the Fairway. The Tunisian prisoner sank the mine, exploding the boat Ismailia and killing many Derbvishes. The expedition found Metemneh ruined and Omdurman defenses expected ruinous.
J N Taylor reports from Utuado under Aug 4 date that white flags appear at outposts and actions near Arecibo and San Juan pause. A messenger from Gen Miles confirms an understanding with Spain, hostilities ordered stopped, and pack mules sent back for tents to form a permanent camp as Massachusetts and Illinois regiments prepare for possible action.
Chicago August 24 Admiral Matsou maga of the Japanese navy arrives en route to England to oversee two Japanese battleship projects. He notes Americans have mastered modern battleship construction and cites the Oregon as a superb example. The navy’s record is praised as a world triumph of new methods over old. He adds courage alone matters little against cool foe skill.
Gen James H Wilson assumes control of the Ponce district in Porto Rico and orders all saloons closed for three days to quiet disturbances. General Grant sets up headquarters in the same area to supervise the measures and restore order.

The Globe Washington correspondent reports that the Sixth Massachusetts is not favored by the War Department though officially there are no criticisms. Privately officials say the regiment earned a black mark for causing trouble, with resignations by Col Woodward and others. Gen Miles has not filed a full report, and Washington lacks interest in obtaining details. The department views the unit as the black sheep among Massachusetts regiments. Other Massachusetts regiments may be mustered out or kept under arms depending on need.
The Lowell and Suburban company began laying the cement foundation for the paving between its rails. The base does not indicate the type of top paving to be used, and no objection has been raised by the city.

William F Hart born in Lowell in 1877 died in Carlisle on Monday at 21. He was active in St Patrick's parish Catholic Lyceum and St Patrick's Cadet band, led the boys choir, and praised for his musical voice. Survived by three sisters, funeral at 830 from 247 School St with Lyceum attendance and a St Patrick's church mass.
