In Wareham Massachusetts on August 14 five youths named Odder Andrews Owen H Bumpus Noble E B Bates Andrew M Gofford and William A Potter were arraigned in the Plymouth county fourth district court on charges of unlawful assembly and riotous assault for the tarring and feathering of James McDonald. Each pleaded not guilty and the cases were continued for one week with bail set at $500 each.
King Edward and Queen Alexandra departed London for Cowes, Isle of Wight, this afternoon in semi state. They were escorted by the Life Guards as crowds cheered through the streets to the railway station.
Washington on August 14 Commissioner Yerken of the internal revenue bureau ordered immediate collection of the war tax on profit and loss accounts of banks trust companies and private banks under the act of June 1898. The estimated total to be collected is about 300 000.

The institution formed by the January 28 1902 trust deed aims to chart action and trustees expect further activity and definite results with 500000 yearly disbursements.
Bishop O'Gormian of Sioux Falls and member of the American Philippine commission returns with a gift to President Roosevelt from the Pope. The mosaic depicts the Pontiff on a Vatican terrace with Rome in the backdrop and is to be presented Saturday at Oyster Bay. Buenos Ayres Aug 14 Paraguay bows to the Cuban Republic and accepts the United States consul at Asuncion as Cuba's representative in Paraguay in a formal recognition by the Paraguayan government.
In Knoxville on August 14 Jerry Logan an elderly former slave and State Supreme Court janitor sold himself to Gerain Stuart the court clerk for a sum listed as zero dollars. He agrees to serve as master until his death to pay off debts. Logan born sixty years ago to slave parents has many white friends of the old regime.
C G Stone, former army engineer, toured Mindanao under Captain Baldwin to verify reports of a white human race there. He found no true white natives, only lighter skinned individuals descended from Castilians who settled and married locals. All descendants retained Moorish faiths.
President Roosevelt will trigger a signal from his summer home at Oyster Bay to open the first Middle States and Mississippi Valley Negro exposition. Joseph Pevey, a church burglar, was captured by Brother Biller and Inspector Martin Maher after attempting to rob the Immaculate Conception church poor boxes. Mathew Carroll 32 collapsed on Worthen Street opposite the schoolhouse this forenoon. An ambulance carried him toward St. John’s hospital but he died en route. He lived at 195 Adams Street and worked in the mills. He leaves a father Thomas and brothers Edward Patrick and Thomas.
Denison Texas August 14 Palmer S Moseley defeats William L Byrd for governor of the Chickasaw nation by six votes. Moseley supported the supplementary treaty while Byrd opposed it.
Tucson Ariz Aug 14 Advices from Nacosari Mexico report severe conditions due to prolonged drought. Manager Shearman of the Shearman Cattle Co says 47 percent of cattle have died for lack of water and pasture. Other ranchers face similar losses and business is paralyzed.
San Francisco August 14 The Chronicle reports Colombian government agents have for weeks sought officers and men on the Pacific coast for its contemplated warships. In Seattle and San Francisco overtures have been made to seafaring men to enlist. A former American naval officer from this city has been offered the role of executive and navigating officer of the Dutch, being outfitted at Seattle.
Governor Odell of New York will dine with the President at a luncheon in Oyster Bay today arriving on the 12 30 train and departing later in the afternoon. A successor for the late John W Ross as commissioner of the District of Columbia may not be announced soon with several new candidates being considered by the President.
Frank Thompson a former New York City lawyer died in Ballston New York today after an eight hour illness from edema of the lungs. He was 69, a graduate of Columbia College and Law School, unmarried and leaves an estate valued at a million dollars.
Arthur Mathison, aged 16, sustained crushed fingers after his right hand was caught between two rollers at Pilling's shoe shop on Wednesday afternoon. He was transported to the emergency department for treatment.
Leonard Warmail, 18, of 63 South Whipple Street, had two fingers caught in a roller at the U S Bunting Company's mill on Wednesday afternoon and was taken to emergency hospital. His home is listed as 6 Coleman Avenue.
In Wilkes Barre on August 14 President Mitchell voiced unclear significance of a large gathering of operators and mine superintendents at Pottsville. Loomis of the Delaware Lackawanna & Western reportedly urged resuming some collieries after touring the strike region, while a Pottsville meeting of superintendents drew the largest attendance yet. The Warnke washery at Duryea resumed operations as about 500 strikers and supporters surrounded the works, with sheriffs and deputies on hand.
