D M Parry president of the National Association of Manufacturers spoke on Mob Spirit in Organized Labor at a Chautauqua session on August 13. He condemned organized labor as a standing mob using coercion to override individual rights, urging adherence to law while warning of economic and industrial damage from mobocracy.
Heavy rains in the past two days flood Silver City New Mexico. A seven foot wall of water sweeps through residences flooding homes and stores with debris piling in streets. Dozens of families homeless and destitute. losses estimated at $100,000.
About 200 Chelmsford residents joined the four religious societies for a Canobie Lake outing. Attendees traveled by special cars at 8 o clock and in waves later, with three pastors Rev Wilson Waters Rev E C Bartlett and Rev C H Ellis among the adults. Milwaukee August 13 John A Showles known as Judge died of heart failure. He ran a Milwaukee saloon for over 80 years declining to mix drinks and rarely served more than three per patron. The educated Mason was famed for punctual six o clock closing.
George Brooks a brakeman was nearly crushed when a freight locomotive backed over him in the Lowell yard. He threw his body to position, was dragged 20 to 30 feet, and survived with scrapes and a bad head wound. He walked to hospital then returned home at 1024 Gorham Street. Brooks insisted on going home after treatment at St John’s hospital.

Danville Illinois August 13 the grand jury investigating the lynching has returned true bills against eighteen men and one woman. Three counts against each for defacing public property attempting to enter a building with intent to murder the sheriff and three prisoners. All are under arrest or will be arraigned Saturday morning.
A five minute police court session handled several drunks. Michael Wall parole man from the State farm was held in 200 dollars until Friday for sentence. Clement Dawson will be placed at the State farm after six weeks. Thomas Perkingon, drunk, was sentenced to two days. Daniel G. Wilson, common drunkard, jailed one month with six months suspended.
A July 13 Boston blaze in the North End damaged the North End Savings Bank on Court street, Schenda's Cigar Factory, and Hall Stickney & Co furniture store on Corn Hill. Two alarms sent crews, limiting damages to about 8000 as smoke and water losses mounted. Fire started in the bank directors’ room. cause not learned.
Spalding park in Lowell, home to the New England league Lowell team, was auctioned Wednesday for 2350 dollars. Edward Cawley bought the eight acre grounds with a grandstand for 1000 and two bleachers, and will decide its future use. The park, once belonging to the late Fred Ela, cost 6300 to establish. It is currently leased to Manager Fred Lake through Sept. 19. If Cawley converts it to house lots, Lake plans to use the grounds as a bail park next season.
Four miners at Franklin Furnace New Jersey were crushed to death by a rock weighing at least fifteen tons while placing timbers in a zinc mine. Two others narrowly escaped, grazed by the rock. The deceased include two Americans named Willis and Stevens and two unidentified foreigners. The shaft has seen previous fatalities since its opening.
Mrs J A Otis residing in the Eliot block Middlesex street fell from a fire escape on Wednesday afternoon striking hard ground. She was not seriously injured. witnesses carried her to her room where she rests comfortably. Onlookers say it is a wonder she survived the fall.
A cloudburst washed out a rock Island line track near McFarland Kansas wrecking the westbound train from Kansas City. The engine mail and one combination car fell into the water. An official said no passengers were hurt though a fireman was likely drowned. The washout occurred about three o clock this morning as a torrent poured down an ordinarily dry washbed.
Abdul Khadir, lion hunter and elephant trainer from India, wandered Brooklyn for four days after docking on the Indramara from Singapore. Starved and unable to speak the language, he was fed by charities and later aided by the British consul to sail home, with a fellow crew member helping confirm his identity.
Gen Nelson Miles toured Colorado Springs on his way to the G A R encampment and received a warm reception from veterans and citizens. He faced questions about a possible run for president and offered no statement. Norman Mack hosted Miles at dinner with Gov Cummins among the guests.

A historical notice details public relief finance led by Hon G E Putnam, outlining funds and plans to increase the relief drive. It lists payments to John C Burke and numerous individual and organizational contributors, totaling 12 192 43 dollars for relief and 2 950 55 dollars in other contributions.
The sub committee on claims of the Relief Committee surveyed 88 dwellings badly damaged by the explosion. Chairman George E. Putnam noted widespread destruction and costly repairs. Wright notes the value of personal physician care for the afflicted, many of whom suffer mentally and physically after losing friends and property. Mr. Wm. E. Riggs was severely affected.
