Manila Aug 11. MacArthur's troops held Angeles after a night without shots. A recon battalion advanced four miles north, opened fire, and faced poorly aimed insurgent fire. Madrid August 11 court martial acquitted Toral and Varela of surrendering Santiago and ordered an additional inquiry into the lack of means in the defense that led to capitulation.
Explanation finished and the court-martial will resume open sessions in Rennes after M. Paleologue of the foreign office completed explanations of the dossier this morning. Sessions will meet again at 6 30 tomorrow morning.
Thomas W. Lawson of Boston buys several horses to augment his prized stud. He secures Sir John A a $3500 show horse who first drew notice at the Manhattan Open Air horse show winning the Lawson stakes. Purchases include a $2000 bay show horse from Fashion Coach Horse Co and two £6000 priced chestnut ponies Gloria and Lady Cuning. They will join Glory Bonnie, paid $3850, and ship from England August 12 for the Newport horse show.
Reports from the Postoffice Department in Washington show Boston July receipts reaching 213,681 dollars, up 5 percent from July 1898. Lowell posts a 3 percent decline, while Worcester soars 343 percent and Springfield climbs 3 percent versus July last year.

Assessors announce the 1899 tax rate of 19.60 per thousand an increase of 1.60 from 1898. The city valuation rises to 71,251,372 with personal value 16,378,017 and real estate 55,878,355. Polls total 24,852 up 3,830. city levy 1,289,868.96 state tax unchanged county and army items listed plus new grade crossing abolition fund 2745.25 and overlayings 29710.50.
In a heavy sea at Vineyard Haven August 10 Defender edged Columbia by 1 minute 14 seconds after a bruising 37 mile course from Bren ton's Reef to West Chop. Vigilant won the fleet with Navahoe second as boisterous wind and rain swept the race.
The seventh annual Bailey Bayley family gathering at Willow Dale drew many Baileys and Bayleys from New England. Dudley P. Bailey presided as president, committees elected officers, genealogies discussed, and a volume on family history was promoted. The body of Henry Cushing Cockerille aged 54 living at 9 Shafer street was found in a house at School and Varney streets with a room full of gas from an open jet. Death cause unclear but suspected accidental asphyxiation. Police notified late by a Citizen reporter. medical examiner cites possible asphyxiation but stance on accident undetermined. Cockerille, a machinist, had a wife and one son and had been visiting the room’s occupant. He had been healthy and employed. neighbors question motive for suicide while gas still on.
Mr. Maurice Daly and Miss Annie Heenan were united in marriage Wednesday night at the Sacred Heart parochial residence by Rev. Walher Paquette O. M. ly Mitchell Daly served as best man and Miss Margaret Scully as bridesmaid. A reception followed at 72 Livingstone Street with lunch provided by the Page company.

Judge Hadley presided as Richard King was fined five dollars for a first offense while John Toohey and Richard Lendrum, both second offenders, received six dollar fines. George Brown admitted larceny of a coat from William Scott at the Arlington hotel and drew six months in jail. George Pierce, a boy, was found guilty of bicycle larceny from Herbert Haselton and his sentence was continued to September 8. Louis Landry’s case was postponed to September 8 for being a stubborn child. James McCullough’s case was adjourned to October 1. James Aloupis, a juvenile Greek, had his assault on Officer Walsh continued to tomorrow. he was not tried with the other Greeks. Frank Carmire faces non-support charges and the case was placed on file.
