New Haven Aug 6 400 conductors and motormen of the Fair Haven and Westville Railroad strike after disputes over reinstating 27 discharged workers and calling for administrative reforms. Traffic halted, crowds jeer, police quell unrest as cars run only sporadically and boycott spreads.
In Chicago on August 5 straining blacksmiths and helpers, who threatened to tie up the Pullman car shops, agreed to return to work for ten days while arbitration settles grievances. Company officials pledged to overcome the difficulties. If proposals fail, about 600 workers will strike.
Fall River on August 5 Charles Ramsay who has served eight years as principal of B M C Durfee High School tendered his resignation at a school committee meeting and it was accepted.
Fourteen yachts from the New York Yacht Club prepared for the Astor cups events in Newport Rhode Island on August 6 with five schooners and nine sloops entered. The weather was dirty and wet but a fresh southeast breeze built as the Nourmahal steered the regatta committee. Two 38 mile triangular courses were available with blocks Island, Sakonnet river, Vineyard Sound and Hen and Chickens lightships as waypoints.

Des Moines Iowa August 5 Isaac Finkelstein who led a crusade that closed eight gambling houses in Des Moines two weeks ago was murdered tonight in an apparent crime of passion or political retaliation.

Officer McCann arrested Napoleon Richard after a Middlesex street call. Richard, an operative at Hamilton Mill, was charged with stealing 150 yards of cloth at six cents a yard. Mary Beaulieu, his mother in law, testified she led the officer to the cloth and claimed he stole it to avoid unpaid work. The family described themselves as poor but honest.
Harry Tracy the escaped convict and murderer killed himself in a wheat field near Fellowes Washington at 430 am after a long range rifle duel with a posse of eight men led by Sheriff Gardner. Spokane dispatch says four hours earlier a special messenger left for reinforcements as 25 armed men departed for the scene of the battle.
Spokane dispatch reports Harry Tracy sent a taunting note from a Lake Creek ranch area near Odessa threatening to "take a tumble" at Cudahee and promising trouble if bothered. The Davenport sheriff's office forwarded the message from Preston noting Tracy spent Monday at L B Eddy's ranch and left a note pinned to a well near Odessa.
News from Yokohama reports Japan has won the race for Marcus Island's guano wealth. The Kasagi returned to Tokio after landing marines to hold the island until US Japan ownership is settled. Captain Rosehill's American expedition was yet to reach Marcus Island, amid competing claims and diplomacy.
John McIntyre, arrested by a Lowell officer for drunkenness, is the man wanted in Lawrence on charges of stealing a watch worth 80 dollars and a chain worth 5 dollars. The items were taken from a Lawrence man on Saturday, left in a vest, and the vest and coat were also taken. McIntyre’s watch was later pawned in a downtown shop for a small sum. Inspector Murphy of Lawrence retrieved him and transported him back, with police claiming positive evidence of guilt.
Philip Allen a brakeman had a narrow escape from being run over near the Bleachery station this morning just after 9 o'clock He slipped while hitching two cars and was struck by a moving car thrown to one side He was taken by ambulance to St Johns hospital Doctors say no obvious injury but an internal issue may develop and prove fatal
Monmouth Illinois August 6 Thomas A Marshall the celebrated trap shooter has received by acclamation the nomination for Congress by the Democrats of the 14th Illinois district. Kahrka Missouri August 6 The first Missouri district Republicans nominated Lee T Robinson of Unionville for Congress by acclamation.
James M. Buchanan, of Marshall and Crosby furniture makers, sustained a deep cut in the upper lip when a piece of wood flew from a circular saw this forenoon. He required eight stitches and was treated at the Emergency hospital.
A daring heist near Marcus Illinois on the Chicago Burlington and Quincy line saw eight masked robbers derail the express car with dynamite, netting six sacks of money. One robber died, Bye fired on the bandits, engineers fled, and a special citizen posse pursued as officials later confirmed six or more men involved and about two thousand dollars in silver recovered.
Fortified by 45 special cars from Moody Street Bridge, French parochial school children rode to Mountain Rock for a grand union picnic. Weather did not dampen spirit as 4000 tickets were issued with demand for more. 4000 to 6000 may have attended.
