Man Killed by Dynamite Blast on Niagara River
Aug. 1 Richard Johnson aged 62 was blown to pieces by a dynamite explosion while rowing across the Niagara river at Tonawanda. Two companions Charles Duffy and Charles Sturges were in the boat. Duffy’s legs were torn. Sturges uninjured. The blast shattered one side of the boat but Sturges kept it afloat until rescue. Johnson apparently planned to explode the stick of dynamite to kill fish. The dynamite slipped and struck the boat, causing the fatal blast. Duffy to recover.
