One belonged to Thomas Appleton of Boston in 1824 the other to Theodore Atkinson of Dover NH in 1818. Big uproar over private use of city commons
Firemen gained control of the South Common with consent of officials and sold 30 plus lots for side shows and tents. Proceeds reportedly did not go to the city treasury but to the firemen’s treasury, raising questions of law and public-rights. City solicitor had ruled commons public, and past council actions restricted exclusive rights. Repairs will cost many dollars after extensive digging.
