A Journal despatch reports Rear Admiral Sampson with the flagship New York silenced Fort Cabanas in 15 minutes. The Port and Ericsson sighted a small battery. the fleet returned fire without further response. No Spanish gunboats have appeared in the region.
New York reports from Hong Kong claim Manila may already be in American hands as Admiral Dewey’s fleet is sighted near Cape Bojinao. Insurgents will attack Manila from the rear at first assault and have reportedly captured New Manila, a suburb. Messages from Manila and Madrid are dismissed as false reports. Kingston Jamaica April 30 reports from Santiago de Cuba that Commandant General Pompo ordered every man aged 15 to 50 to volunteer for the Spanish service under penalty of arrest and possible death. A reign of terror drives thousands to flee. the British consul has cabled for a warship.
Washington April 30 dispatch says three Spanish torpedo boats departed St Vincent this morning, two towed by transports, heading toward the Canaries, details unclear.
Toulon France April 30 report says the American yacht Namouna en route to Marseilles was chased into Saint Tropez by Spanish warships.
Boston April 30 The gunboat Ban croft sailed for Norfolk. She was fully equipped with ammunition and guns. The crew prepared for transport duty and possible action as the vessel departed the harbor under orders.
Two warships and two torpedo boats passed Peterhead at midnight and headed northward, reported from Aberdeen dated April 30. The vessels moved in a northerly direction away from the coast in a quiet patrol.
Madrid reports that the Spanish gunboat Ligera engaged an American gunboat near Cardenas. The Americans fired seventy shots, all of which missed, and were compelled to retire as Ligera maintained steady fire.
The cruiser Minneapolis touched Rockland this morning and then steamed toward Portland, Me. The event occurred in Rockland, Me., on April 30 as the ship moved on to its next port.
The cruiser Columbia sailed this morning from Boston likely bound for Portland.
Camden New Jersey April 30 Eli Shaw was found not guilty of the murder of his grandmother by a jury.
The American liner Paris reached New York from Southampton after a seven day and seventeen hour voyage. She reported sighting no Spanish vessels and steered about thirty miles north of the regular shipping lane.
Drs. Dutton and Don of the Sixth Regiment arrived at the armory at 1 15 this afternoon and immediately began the physical examination of Company C men.
Halifax April 30 reports no news of a Spanish gunboat reaching the Bay of Fundy. The bay, described as inland sea between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, could not be navigated by such craft without widespread confirmation.

Arthur Woodward, once of Lowell, now in a German town, sought a birth certificate to marry abroad. He requested Lowell’s city clerk to forward proof, which returned unreadable this morning with foreign postmarks. The couple may already be traveling for their wedding.
Alarm at 7 57 this morning reported a bed fire in a house owned by Bridget Fox in an alley off Lakeview avenue. The blaze was likely sparked by a stove, extinguished with little damage. A boy named Thomas Kierney was run over by the chief’s wagon while crossing Lakeview avenue near the chemical wagon, suffering a knee bruise but no fracture. a surgeon was summoned.
Manager Fay presents a two and a half hour sacred program by the Corse Payton companies at the Opera House tomorrow night. Corie Payton Miss Etta Reed Mr. Corbett and Mr. Sullivan headline a varied illustrated song program with all principals taking part. Seating prices mirror the popular rate and the theatre should be filled.

Police Court in Hadley found J Cornelius O Mahoney probably guilty of shooting John McCabe in the shoulder during a jealous incident involving McCarty and held him in 800 dollars for the superior court. He faced an assault charge against McCarty with 100 dollars bail. Mark Donlan received three months in the work house for drunkenness. John W. Smith four months for a similar offence. John F. Murphy ordered to the Bridgewater state farm for eight months but held in 200 dollars bail for the superior court on appeal. George F. Hall jailed five months for larceny.
Peter McDonald drowned after striking a wire cable while on a raft near Hunt's Falls while dredging for Barton and Runels. His body was recovered after nearly five hours as a rescue attempt drew a crowd of about 1500 onlookers. Patrick Holland, who witnessed the drowning, later found the body and news spread quickly. Undertaker's crews first tried, then Howard Rogers and Frank Johnson attempted the recovery, finally securing a line to the body but the cable prevented detachment before a rope snapped. Authorities and workers persisted despite setbacks.
The gang and his brother used the same cable to pull the body loose and bring it ashore. They delivered the body to Brooks' morgue for transport to Nova Scotia. The New England Telephone company notified the father, who arranged for proper transportation and planned to accompany the body home to Lowell.

A special committee met yesterday with the Mayor present and discussed a possible inspector of wires appointment subject to aldermen confirmation. The council notes include street tearing limits, emergency rights for water and lighting, a paving blocks contract to Lewis Farmer at 31.83 per thousand, and bids for gasoline lighting.
