Taunton April 29 Today Mayor O Hearne sent a letter to the license commissioners giving them the option to resign or stand trial before a court on charges he has prepared. He says he can prove them guilty of outraging public sentiment in granting licenses and hints at more than mere poor judgment. He will pursue the matter to the highest court. He asserts the licenses violated the spirit of the law and notes he warned members individually not to grant licenses to those known to operate illegally during no license times.
Berlin reports from Pekin that German troops struggling through Shan Si province faced rocks rolled down the mountain by Chinese defenders. The Germans suffered one officer and seven men killed and four officers and 35 men wounded in the encounter.
Tokyo reports from Matsumai opposite Vladivostok that the harbor is being transformed into a naval port and that work is nearly finished. The announcement comes via the St. Petersburg correspondent of the Cologne Gazette in Berlin dated April 29.
Buffalo April 29. George H. Fernald of New York stock broker 56 shot and killed himself at his brother William's home in West Seneca yesterday. He quit his business about six months ago due to nervous prostration and made his home there.

B F Butler Post No 42 G A R announces a public meeting in Memorial hall next Wednesday at eight. Walter Allen editor of the Boston Herald will lecture on the life of Frederic Douglass, who was his personal friend.
Nicholas Christian was placed on probation by the police court on a larceny charge, and it is stated he was not involved in the separate charge of stealing a skirt and cape. The latter complaint named a different defendant.
The Monday night Bible class will be resumed at the Y W C A this evening at 7 30. The Thompson Hardware company will fit a Columbia or Morrow coaster brake to any make of bicycle for $5 75. This price Includes new spokes and rim. It is a great offer. Remember that the annual ball of the Excelsior band occurs Tuesday evening April 30 at Associate hall. Continuous music for dancing will be furnished by two orchestras who will play alternately. Concert 8 to 9 dancing 9 to 12. Tickets 25 cents.

A Saturday blaze largely ruined the Silver and Gay machine shop in North Chelmsford, one of the area’s oldest industrial landmarks. Loss is estimated at $50,000 to $60,000, with major damage to patterns and patterns stock. fire started on the top floor, cause under question. Lowell and local crews fought the flames for hours as smoke and wind hampered efforts. several villagers were injured lightly while aiding. The North Chelmsford Supply Co and Lowell Model Co suffered totals near $90,000 with insurance coverage.

A chair cushion caught fire in a North Chelmsford boarding house yesterday afternoon. An excited individual threw the burning cushion from a window onto dry shingles on the piazza roof. The blaze spread quickly but was put out after several buckets of water were used.
A still alarm at about 9 30 o clock Tuesday morning summoned part of the fire department to a slight blaze in a tenement house at 182 Moody street. The fire was caused by an overheated stove. The house is occupied by Mrs. Kenyon and owned by Albert Wheeler.

The company owns a mill at Chattahoochee Georgia, whose machinery was moved south earlier. The local offices stay open but nearer trade centers in Connecticut valley.
Otto Ronaldo, using the name Deike, previously lost to Louis St. Cyr in a lifting bout and claimed to lift 14 pounds more. He pressed for a rematch, but St. Cyr delayed until agreeing to a three-way match involving Herman Smith. The bout is set for about a week ahead for $500 per side. A full military band will perform at the Excelsior band dance Tuesday night.
The police court trial of Joseph Fontaine ended with a guilty verdict for stealing a dress from Philip Goldman. The case tied Fontaine to two accomplices, Boissonneault and the unnamed third man, with testimony from witnesses including Arthur Beever. Fontaine received six months in the house of correction after a prior bicycle theft conviction was cited.
