Queenstown April 15 Gunnery Lieut James H S Bourne Lieut Miller and nine bluejackets were killed when a 12 inch gun on battleship Mars burst during target practice off Berehaven. Several others were injured as the breech blew out after two misfires.
An infernal machine arrived at the Grand Junction post office and was delivered to Isaac C. Wyman, Boston millionaire and owner of the Rookcliffe railroad. He handled it carefully, preventing an explosion. The device was packed in a pasteboard box and turned over to authorities. the mailing origin remains unknown.
In Chicago on April 15 a savage duel with 18 inch butcher knives broke out in the Union League club kitchen between Emil Colton, a butcher, and Jules Kuntz, a chef. Colton nearly lost a hand and Kuntz received four wounds with arterial severing and a fractured skull. The fight lasted about ten minutes as witnesses stood by. Both men collapsed unconscious and were removed. Colton had been discharged from the club, the dispute arising from Colton accusing Kuntz of his dismissal.
Four counts sat in the Supreme Judicial Court with Judge Barker presiding. Most jury cases were postponed to the Cambridge session opening next Monday at East Cambridge. Several cases were transferred to Cambridge while only informal matters were heard before a midday adjournment.
In Hill versus Young the jury found for the plaintiff this forenoon for 54.75. In Eagan versus Boston and Northern Street Railway a jury was drawn and the court adjourned while the jury viewed the premises. Plaintiffs are M. J. Fagan and George Patnaude aged 15. Eagan alleges a January 26 1902 wagon accident on Lakeview avenue after crossing the tracks on a down grade. J F Owens represents plaintiffs. Richardson Trull and Wier for the railroad.
The probate court reviewed several minor matters, allowed the third account of the trustees under the will of the late Cyrus K. Russell, with Charles H. Conant acting as attorney for the trustees. It also discussed Mrs Daniels petition for separate maintenance from Joshua Daniels of Tewksbury but set no specific hearing date.
Referee Henry E. Warner presided over final meetings for H. B. Coburn J. M. G. Burns Charles H. Savage and George B. Hall. Adjourned first meetings for Geo. W. Horne Samuel J. Swallow. First meetings included Mary B. Hilton and Chas. H. Noyes. In the Conant case Charles H. Conant named trustee with liabilities of $2804.76 and assets of $2240.
Burglars blew open the safe of the Huntington post office around 2 o'clock this morning. Residents awakened by the explosion. the intruders fired during the break in and attempted to loot the facility.
Honolulu reports forester E M Griffith warns Hawaii’s forests suffer from cattle damage which lowers rainfall and water supply. He urges fencing high forest areas and excluding cattle to prevent further loss. Also noted are leper aid appeals and remarkable rainfall records from Kakaiau and Naihku during early March.
Several shots were fired at one of them and the assailants disappeared toward the railroad. No money was in the safe and it is believed no stamps were taken as the robbers fled in fear. No identification of the culprits or their crew was found amid the wrecked office.
Baroness Mary von Olenhausen a Lexington native who earned the iron cross from Kaiser William for her Franco Prussian War service died at her Lexington home. Born Mary Phinney February 4, 1817 she nursed in the Civil War and later led nurses training in Boston. She traveled to Germany with wounded soldiers and was honored by Emperor William with the iron cross and later the Emperor’s medal. The medals were bequeathed to the Lexington Historical Society.
Vanderbilt Webb interests seek Privy Council approval to build a two tube subway under the St Lawrence from the South Shore to Montreal. The tunnel, largest of its kind, will connect South Shore and St Helen s Island to Montreal with separate tracks for cars freight and a second tube for pedestrians and teams. Estimated cost ranges from 4 to 6 million dollars.
Justice Scott reserved decision on a motion to compel Mrs. Helen Potts Hall to file a bill of particulars in her suit against E. L. Norton and Theophilus Gilman as administrators of George F. Gilman. The $26,948.30 plus interest was deposited with Gilman’s brokers on February 22, 1901 for Hall’s use. The brokers interpleaded the Gilman estate administrators, who later received the money from the brokers. Hall now seeks to recover the funds from the estate.
London April 15 budget proposals to the House of Commons were fairly well received by the stock exchange where no major features appeared beyond a consols decline ahead of a new loan issue. The Northwestern Association of Millers voted to raise flour price and add a five pence per hundredweight duty on pre today deliveries. Sugar slumped heavily in Liverpool as buyers anticipated no sugar duty change, while speculators who stocked up expect further declines.
Baron Kodama resigns as war minister to govern Formosa. Viscount Terauschi named his successor. Eight main Japanese silk factories form a 5,000,000 yen trust to manage business. Hong Kong plague causes quarantine on ships. Manila imposes five day vessel quarantine for Hong Kong and Amoy arrivals.
Oxford April 15 The refusal of Weavers at Andrew Howarth & Sons Woolen Mills to work has closed the plant. The strike seeks a 1 percent advance, leaving other workers idle. The firm says the shutdown is definite, while some staff seek new jobs and storekeepers feel the impact. Residents fear prolonged closure could break up the village.
Late reports from the hail strike area describe extensive damage to berries cotton and corn. Strawberry losses reach about 60000 dollars. Fayette county reports cotton and corn beaten into the ground and fruit trees stripped. Hailstones over an inch observed near Swiss Alp. Livestock losses include several cows and hogs killed by lightning and one fatality reported.
A Parral report claims Charles Gilbert Webb captured by Inspector Fredericks and an El Paso detective is no longer jailed, as his brother Lester Webb has allegedly substituted for the prisoner. Webb, sought in Idaho for stage robbery, was held after a nine year chase.

Concord New Hampshire April 15. Miss Susan G Perkins adds 3000 dollars to establish scholarships in memory of her father Hamilton Eliot Perkins. The same amount is given to Norwich University Northfield Vermont where he graduated in 1824.
Albany April 15 Gov Orell signed a bill allowing the Pennsylvania railroad to build a tunnel to bring its line into New York City.
Seattle on April 15 reports a 400 mile line from Valdez Alaska to Eagle City in the Klondike region will soon begin. An English and American company plans to rush completion with a $15 million capital. The route aims to an all American path via Copper River and Tanana mining districts.
Chicago on April 15. Timothy W. Le Quatte, invited to a New York banquet, replied to the toast via telephony. From the Rand McNally building he spoke while forty guests in New York listened with receivers. Applause echoed across the wire to Chicago.

Springfield Illinois April 15 Frank Zumbrook broke the national indoor running long dive record with a distance of 13 feet 7 inches surpassing former holder S Beck of Portland Oregon who had stood at 13 feet 5 inches The feat occurred at the YMCA indoor athletic meet last night and adds a new mark for the event with Zumbrook the new record holder.
An early morning alarm from box 8 reported a fire in a cottage owned by SS. N. Haris on Cs od street. Sparks from a nearby brush fire in a vacant lot ignited the blaze, causing about 50 dollars in damage, mainly to the roof.
Cincinnati reports John Hamilton a 25 year old colored man was found dead on Front street after consuming 10 glasses of whiskey, 10 of gin, 10 cans of beer, and 24 hard boiled eggs for three white men Sunday night. The incident occurred early Monday morning at his home.
South McAlester April 15 Judge W H H Clayton of the Central district has enjoined Dr W E Crowder founder of Crowder City from further sale of lots, holding that an Indian cannot sell any part of his allotment.

Chicago April 15. The Northwestern university law school will broaden its educational work next fall with a new endowment of $300,008 from the institution's trustees.
Dracut Centre Village Improvement Society held a meeting at the meeting house with high attendance. President Kitchen presided and Mrs Granville Coburn served as secretary. The funeral of Rev. Christopher Starr Lefingwell, rector of St. Savior's Bar Harbor Maine for 20 years, was held at Trinity Church Middletown Connecticut this afternoon. Services were conducted by Bishop Codman of Maine.
