An April 11 boiler explosion at Lewis M. Mann & Son's wood working factory in West Paris Missouri injured engineer Herbert Ommons, 40, fatally likely, and destroyed much property. Twenty workers were inside. the cause remains unknown after a recently inspected boiler.
In Boston on April 11 a man claiming to be Charles Warner resisted arrest by an officer. Police identify him as Mark C. Sennett, a known criminal, during a struggle that saw him throw away a gold watch, break handcuffs, and shatter two cab windows. Eleven cheap watches were found on him.
A census of the Samoan group shows 32,000 in Upolu and other German islands and 5,800 in six US governed islands. The report cites great infant mortality caused by mothers' ignorance and poor care of dieting infants.
In New York on April 11 handwriting experts testified in the case against lawyer Patrick charged with Rice's death. They said checks allegedly signed by Rice and signatures in Patrick's favor in the will were not written by the same person.
A man known as King, charged with passing bad money, plans to use the name Alberto henceforth after arresting authorities learned he had previously given the name Benjamin. New York April 10 The Phillips academy Andover alumni held their annual meeting and dinner at the University club with over a hundred attendees. Dr Leander T Chamberlain president and Dr Cecil Bancroft principal announced four new items including a summer construction of a gymnasium Brothers Field a Bancroft hall dormitory and a secret gift larger than any before. The gift could fund archaeology work including a department, specimens valued at forty to fifty thousand dollars and related projects. Alumni elected Horace E Deming as president and named a full slate of officers and executive committee members.
In Hartford a suit was filed by Helen Potts Hall of New York claiming an adopted daughter’s share of George F. Gilman of Bridgeport. The action names Bridgeport Trust Co as administrator and George W. Smith as receiver. The complaint, 21 pages with 17 counts, asserts Gilman’s estate above 1.5 million and details a tea business partnership dispute with George H Hartford and 200 stores.
A Pekin despatch says Capt. Bartsch of the Second German Infantry was found dead in the Pekin neighborhood yesterday, claimed as an accident. Another despatch reports he was shot near the Summer Palace. His horse is missing.
In New York on April 11 employees and officials of the Central Railroad of New Jersey will hold a conference in Jersey City on wage disputes. The meeting is expected to yield a compromise without a strike and to appoint a new conference committee representing the strikers for continued negotiations.
All Amoskeag mills except Jefferson mill will resume operations today after a water shutdown in the Merrimack river. Jefferson mill will restart next Monday. About 6000 workers were temporarily laid off due to the stoppage.
Richard Croker's Scotchman II won the Swan Mead ow welter plate the sovereign for three year olds today at London racecourse. Lester Reiff rode the victorious horse in a close finish amid a busy spring meeting.
The State lodge session opened with orders to make November home week and recruit former members. Rev Alfred Noon spoke on temperance, with Miss Jessie Forsyth present. Willard O Wyle urged active Good Templarship and voting to end drink. Afternoon sessions closed with De gree exams and notes on unity and expansion of the temperance movement.
In Lowell a banquet for about 100 Good Templars gathered in the hall with out of town members and locals from Lowell. G C T J Sidney Hitchins of Melrose presided at the toast and Rev A B Kenyon welcomed the grand lodge. Frank J Jefferson spoke for the order and his wife Josie was also invited. Rev James Yeames praised the gathering noting his 380th year with the order.

In superior court Yarnold family sues Bowers Brothers for damages alleging criminal negligence after George M Yarnold drowned when a steamer collided with a dory carrying youths on Lake Mascuppic. Witnesses describe sighting the steamer, its course change, and near shore impact. other boat occupants corroborate.
The Lowell post office saw an eight percent drop in receipts last month, the largest decline among U.S. cities. Hood & Ayer Co. shaped mailing activity, with one year stamp purchases totaling about 100000 dollars, and Postmaster Thompson noted their business exceeds all others in Lowell combined. April mail volume is expected to rebound to previous levels as advertisers plan seed package mailings and similar matter.

The civil service commissioners rule Laforest Beals has no hearing claim before the mayor over his removal as assistant superintendent of streets. The board notes foreman roles fall outside civil service and insists on an eligible list prior to appointment. The city calls for bids to supply fresh beef for six months, about 1800 pounds weekly, with a bond required for the winner.
New England Telephone and Telegraph linemen and Boston Electric Light workers threaten a May 1 strike unless an eight hour day and a 50 cent daily wage raise are granted. They currently work nine hours for 2.50 daily, affecting over 1000 men if enforced. Petitions were submitted to company executives. Sherwin and Heemer gave mixed responses.
In Havana April 11 the Cuban constitutional convention heard long speeches by Juan Gualberto Gomez and Gen. Sanguily on the Platt amendment. Gomez attacked U S sovereignty, saying he would rather Spain rule Cuba than endure American influence, and lamenting the amendment as a threat to Cuba’s independence.
In Manchester on April 1 Orlando H. Underhill and wife Nettie were buried side by side. Services were private. Underhill killed his wife at a garment factory then killed himself in a swamp, dying from exposure and wounds. Their deaths are ruled as murder and death by own action.
