The third day of the New England Methodist Conference opened at St Pauls Church with rain outside and members arriving in private carriages. Bishop Fowler urged careful selection of new local deacons and warned against weak preaching while urging ministers to focus on reaching the poor. He emphasized discipline, study, and personal knowledge of parishioners, urging diligence in sermon prep and a steady program of study and preaching to build a enduring church.
The gathering heard bishops question candidates for orders, noting a Boston University man among those called. Dr. Hamilton urged stronger action for aiding negro education in the south, criticizing lukewarm church funding and extolling backbone in ministry while urging practical preaching and fewer empty talks.
