The London Times prints a wartime letter from J. O. C. praising Kipling as ill yet spared. It recalls prayers and camaraderie at parade, asking God to keep Kipling from dying and to let him keep writing. The letter ends with thanks to Kipling for leaving him with their memory to remember.

In Massachusetts on Friday three men died in accidents. Jeremiah Murphy, 55, of 158 Chelsea Street Charlestown, fell down stairs at 8 Mansfield Place. Robert Day, 30, Milton, a teamster, was killed near Field's Corner Dorchester when horses ran away while he drove a stone team. William Harron, 22, Everett, was struck and killed in the Cochrane chemical works yard, likely while crossing between tracks of Boston and Albany and Boston and Maine.

In the Executive Mansion blue room at 11 a.m. today French ambassador M. Cambon presented two Sevres vases to President McKinley and the United States. The gift from late President Faure commemorates the Franco-American cable opening on August 17, the first messages over the new lines between the White House and Elysee. The eight foot high deep blue vases with pedestal stands are among the finest White House gifts.
Kang Yu Wei the Chinese reformer, deposed by the Empress Dowager, reached Victoria from Yokohama and plans to travel to London seeking refuge. Once chief commissary and secretary of the board of public works, he led reforms of the old regime. A price was set on his head and he fled by British ship to Hong Kong, then Tokyo, now fearing assassination at home.
Washington reports that the transport Sheridan will sail tomorrow at 7 o'clock from Singapore. All are well. She previously sailed February 19 with the Twelfth Infantry and part of the Seventeenth Infantry.

Harry Worcester six dies when a one hundred pound rock falls from a rock pile at Severance St Denis Forest street near a birthday party. Edith Hodgkins is injured when struck in the leg, both children were in attendance at the St Denis home.
In New York on April 8 a 24 hour go as you please race from Grand Central Palace attracted 33 pedestrians. By 9 am only 23 remained. The field tired from a very hot pace with scores at 11 am listing Hegelman 76 Cox 75.3 Day 70.12 and Glyck 70.7.
In East Haddam, Connecticut, an Italian barber, once a local shopkeeper, went on a shotgun rampage this morning wounding farmer John B. Gelston. Gelston, aged 60, was killed when the barber was shot by a mob led by Constable A S Bugbee. The killer died instantly. The body was taken to the Gelston barn. In his pockets were found a

Soldiers and sailors from the Spanish war and Civil War veterans, G A R affiliates, and guests occupied the floor and tables. W H Wiggin is constructing two cottages and a two tenement house at Wigginville and has laid the foundation for five additional cottages.
Harvey M Pratt aged 63 committed suicide Friday at his Main street home in Hingham by shooting himself with a .38 revolver. Death was instantaneous. he was found by his wife. A Civil War veteran and town constable, Pratt had been despondent for weeks and leaves a widow and family.
The city committee on electric wires debated a drafted ordinance by Alderman Derby establishing the inspector of wires. It outlines duties including wiring supervision, annual inspections, removal of dangerous dead wires, record keeping, permits, access to premises, adherence to insurance rules, and enforcement with penalties. The measure also covers notices, appeals, reports to the mayor and aldermen, and inspector duty hours, with surrounding committee actions noted.
Purchasing Agent Barrett and William F Sullivan report the city awards a 700 ton pipe contract to M J Drummond & Co of 192 Broadway New York. Pipes 12 feet long must withstand 300 pounds pressure and be coated inside and out with coal varnish at 22.41 per ton totaling 15657 dollars, about 29.46 more than last year but considered a bargain. This contract is second only to coal in size among this year’s purchases.
City council votes for a new principal assessor to replace Mr. Pratt amidst alleged pledge reversals. Officials weigh George W. Mary Kershaw noted shoplifter with multiple aliases was arrested by Lowell Inspectors on Rock Street and arraigned on five counts of larceny. She pleaded not guilty and was held on $400 per count totaling $2000. The case includes theft of a watch linked to Brown, with conflicting testimony and a later acquittal.
Police report that Mary Kershaw alias Mary Ann Taylor alias Milly Leach alias Mary Fenton was linked to a Boston purchase of dresses waists skirts undergarments shoes and a hat valued at about 2000 found in her Lowell room. The hat valued at 25 was traced to Rose Jordan Hartford. She fled after bail and was recaptured at police custody with authorities noting repeated shoplifting and rapid movement between cities.
In a police court session two drunken arrests were released on Probation Officer Tuttle’s recommendation. William B. O'Brien was found guilty of being a common drunkard and sentenced to the State farm. Susie Sarkolofsky faced larceny charges over a watch belonging to Michael Brown after a gathering on Chapel street with several attendees and beer present.
Miss Kate Custy died yesterday at 4 Walnut street after an illness. She leaves a mother, two sisters, and a brother Edward. she formerly worked for a Carpet Manufacturing company. Her father died about two months ago. Mary A. Trowbridge widow of John Trowbridge died Thursday at 9 Clark street aged 75. Born in South Merrimack, New Hampshire she moved to Lowell in 1845. She leaves daughter Mrs. James A. Giles sister Mrs. Lucy Hunt and grandson Everett Trowbridge.
The funeral of John J. Redman was held at 2 PM from his home at 35 Royal Street with Rev C E Fisher. bearers included John H Redman and James J Redman. Burial was in Edson cemetery. Mary B Kent’s funeral followed at 2 PM from 818 Merrimack Street with Rev Chas T Billings. bearers included C A Durgin and Walter Coburn. Burial was in Lowell cemetery.
Mrs H W Derby of 836 East Merrimack Street and her assistant Misa Emelia Lombard are in New York. James B Roach third vice president of the National Iron Moders union is in the city on official business. The Sixteen society met at Mrs Zoa Leighton's home for a literary entertainment and refreshments. Sergeant Fred P Grant of Battery K Seventh Heavy Artillery stationed at Fort Schuyler New York arrived in Lowell on a seven day furlough. A son arrived at the home of Dr W S Hervey Grand Street.
