San Francisco April 7 It is reported the collier Syndia is to be sent to Pago Pago Samoa to prevent interference with the construction of a wharf at the coaling station by the United States. The rapid fire guns of the Syndia will aid in protecting the workmen amid possible trouble with the natives.
Secretary Alger drew warm crowds in Ponce P R during a visit that included talks with students and merchants at a banquet. The town glowed with decorations and lights as he prepared to continue overland travel to San Juan the next day.
Marblehead April 7 The Norseman was towed by tugs this morning toward Boston for temporary patching as repairs proceed.
Washington April 7 Gen Russell Hastings declines the President's offer to become director of the bureau of American republics. The decision comes as President extends the executive appointment. Hastings will be taken to New York for permanent repairs.
Police seized a cache of items at Catherine Giles Merrimack street home after a search for alleged shoplifting. The haul includes silk, stockings, gingham, dress goods, towels, and tablecloths tied to G L Taylor Co McIntyre and Co. Giles, a mother of several children, has been arrested before. Her husband, a gardener, left an infant in care at the station.

Lowell Council No 8 entertained John A. Currier District Deputy Grand Regent of the Royal Arcanum and about 300 visitors from Boston and nearby towns. The event featured a Kempton ritual initiation of five candidates, a large overflow gathering, speeches by Lowell locals, and a banquet illuminated by national colors. The Boston party traveled by special train with stopovers at Somerville Medford and Woburn, then joined by officers from Highland North Billerica Centralville Industry councils.
A throng of about two thousand greeted visiting Arcanum members as the train rolled into Middlesex street depot. The National band led by R. A. Griffiths struck up, and a grand procession followed through Thorndike, Dutton, Merrimack, Central, Middlesex, and Odd Fellows temple. The Lowell council No. 8 hosted the event with full honors, including a three minute toast by Henry Goodwin and a sermon on Arcanumism in the Old Bay State by Grand Regent A. G. Walsh.
In a police court session Judge Hadley convicted Thomas A. Ramsey and James A. Cudworth of illegal liquor keeping at Hotel Belvidere. Each was fined $100 after trial over meals and drink served without food. The proceeding included testimony from officers and a related shoplifting case involving Catherine Giles.
Morning session reports a verdict for the defendant in Barker v. Lawrence Manufacturing company. At adjournment, LeClaire v LeClaire rested on alienation of affection claim, with the plaintiff still on the stand.
