Providence April 6 Twenty five hundred cotton operatives are out in Rhode Island and the strike may spread to the Pawtucket valley. Several mills are idle as workers demand restoration of old wages.
Private advices from Honolulu indicate a plan to flood Hawaii with Portuguese laborers from the Azores. Ten thousand are to be imported as soon as arrangements are complete unless halted. The move follows an approach to exclude Japanese workers under the American contract labor law.
Berlin reports that Ambassador Andrew D. White accepted appointment to represent the United States at the Hague peace conference opening May 18. He indicatedfour delegates and one secretary will accompany him, with the secretary a New Yorker and trusted presidential associate.
The steamer Norseman went ashore on Tom Moore's ledge off Marblehead Neck on March 29 and was floated this morning, towed into Marblehead harbor, and beached near Fort Glover. At low tide the hull will be nearly dry and repairs can be readily made.
Washington reports all troops slated to return to the United States for muster out are expected to come home by May 1. In March thirteen thousand returned and about twenty five thousand are expected in April. Precautions will be taken to prevent infection from the troops.

Miss Helen Gould this morning sent a check for $1000 to the New York fire department to be devoted to the relief fund of the department. The contribution supports firemen and families affected by the recent emergency in New York.
Deadwood South Dakota April 5 A Lead fire last night razed property valued at $100 000. Firemen were unable to assist effectively due to low water pressure leaving the scene at the mercy of flames.
The Mule Spinners' association delegates met at Templar hall in Boston to discuss the practice of working overtime in several state mills. The convention opened with a vote on enlarging the general executive board to boost outreach to country districts and grow membership.
Delegates reviewed industrial commission findings and pressed for reduced hours. Spinners in Taftville reported leaving work due to a weaver strike and the Lowell group pledged support. Overtime at Hamilton Tremont and Boott mills drew resolutions against it, with spinners urged to stop overtime. A Marlboro shoe workers delegation spoke, spinners donated 100 to strikers, and Robert Howard received a life membership.
Veterans of Porto Rico and southern drills lead Company C Sixth Regiment through a formal armory drill before Big General James L. Carter. About 60 members, led by Capt. Greig, received praise for discipline and appearance. Memorial service for Sergt. Wenden at St Pauls Church Sunday noted. ambulance corps to attend.

Catherine Giles was arrested this morning by Officer Gregg for stealing a wrapper from Cook, Taylor and Company on Merrimack Street. A quick-acting clerk alerted police and the suspect offered resistance. The garment was recovered on her person at Yee police station.
Mrs Mary Louisa Craig wife of Rev J M Craig D V pastor of the First Presbyterian church died this morning at 2 10 at St Johns hospital aged 55 born in Wayne county New York of American birth her family lived in Farmington Washington county Wis where she married July 15 1868 The Craigs lived in Holyoke Newport and Lowell where he pastored churches She aided church work but poor health limited her activity Since April 1898 they have resided in Lowell where an internal tumor led to surgery at St Johns hospital She did not recover and is survived by husband four children James Edgar Edna Louisa Clarence Eugene Edith Damaris and two brothers in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Miss Mary B. Kent longtime Bartlett school first assistant for 37 years died at 9 15 this morning at her sister’s home. A New Hampshire native, she trained in Lowell and Salem Normal, taught since 1859, resigned 1898 due to health. Survived by four sisters, with school board and officials praising her faithful service. Also notes deaths of Mrs. Annie M. Sands and Emily S. Merrill.

Gifts include an easy chair from Mr Hill’s three brothers, a picture from young women, and a china set from Miss Bessie Young. M G Perkins travels to Washington for a few weeks. Lawrence city council votes 800 for a reception to returned soldiers. a parade will follow with brass bands volunteering.
