The jury found for the plaintiff this morning in the Wiggin vs Fiske case, awarding 150 dollars. In Barker vs Lawrence Manufacturing Co. the plaintiff described May 1, 1897 injuries while employed there as witnesses testified and the trial proceeded with several witnesses sworn before noon.

Engineer James Bickford fatally injured. three local boys scorched. Fire destroyed houses, gate house wrecked, passenger F H Lawrence burned escaping. Engine and baggage car damaged. traffic halted about 30 minutes.
Rear Admiral Bradford, chief of the bureau of equipment, has returned from the Dry Tortugas where naval work includes large steel coal sheds with latest machinery. The distilling plant is completed and Tortugas will soon be able to care for any number of battleships with a 40,000 ton coal storage at all times.
Yale Alumni Weekly appeals for two million dollars to fund an elaborate 1901 celebration in New Haven Connecticut. A quarter of a million already raised.
Kentucky Distilleries and Warehouse Co has purchased the distilleries of James Waisa & Co in Cincinnati for over half a million dollars. The deal announced April 5 transfers ownership of the whiskey works to the Kentucky company, marking a major local consolidation in the industry.

The accounts committee last night delayed Muldoon’s weighing coil bill noting he is not an authorized weigher under ordinances. Other bills were left for explanation including a 19.40 charge for a Brighton cow-purchase trip by the overseers of the poor, and a dinners item exceeding a dollar limit. Barrett from the supply department will explain a 10.50 expense bill.

The funeral of Joseph L. Walch, a Company M soldier who died of typhoid fever at Santiago on August 15, 1898, was held this morning. militia companies and city officials attended. The service at Sacred Heart church featured a solemn high mass and a moving eulogy on duty and patriotism. The burial followed with military rites, volleys, and taps as the body was laid to rest.
City Solicitor Qua rules that Section 5 of the 1896 act applies to Lowell veterans in the street department, requiring a full hearing before removal or transfer. He concludes veterans cannot be discharged or transferred without consent and a hearing, affirming the question in the affirmative.
Owen J. Carney proprietor of the Waverly house was found guilty by Judge Hadley in police court of illegally selling liquor and maintaining a liquor nuisance. He was fined 100 dollars on the first charge and 50 on the second after witnesses testified to beer with sandwiches and crowded registers amid false names. Birge Pattee was named in the complaint but not prosecuted.
A court session noted the defendant was discharged and the case against the Hotel Belvidere was continued to Friday.
Mrs Jane E Somers wife of M T Somers died Tuesday night at her Ludlam street home aged 58 years 11 months and 23 days She is survived by her husband one son and two daughters
The funeral proceeded from 1838 Mt. Washington street with a solemn mass at 9 o'clock led by Rev. A Nolin OMI. A large crowd attended. The choir, directed by HB. A Racicot, performed a Gregorian mass. Floral tributes honored the deceased, with bearers including Paul Vigeant and Timothy Vigeant. Interment followed at St. Joseph's Cemetery in East Chelmsford.
Edward R. Donovan and Alice M. Tobey were married Monday evening at 7 at St Peter’s parish residence with Rev John A Mc Kenna officiating. Best man Frank Wright and bridesmaid Annie Donovan attended in a private ceremony.
