South Framingham April 2 The tenement block owned by Charles and Bertram Cutler was destroyed by fire early today. Losses total about 11000 with building insured for 8000. Nine families escaped with scant belongings and two insured. each tenant faces 200 to 500 dollars in losses.
Rowley reports its worst fire when S A Boynton heel factory ignited at 4 am. Six buildings burned before flames were controlled, totaling about $18,000 in loss to owners and occupants. Fire spread rapidly, threatening nearby structures before containment.
A severe blaze engulfed the heel factory, Mr. Boynton’s residence and stable, Maplebraeck’s grocery, O. U. A. M. hall, and D. M. Spiller’s residence. Local residents fought the flames with help from Ipswich, and the total loss is estimated at 18009 dollars with partial insurance coverage.
London April 2 reports say the Barbert Transvaal wreck on March 30 caused 39 deaths and 45 injuries, mainly Hampshire regiment. Initial Boer blame dismissed by Lord Kitchener who states the incident was accidental as the engine and five trucks jumped the track while descending a steep gradient.
Pretoria April 2 details of the crash show the engineer lost control on a downgrade after leaving Barberton. For three miles the train sped at 80 mph, then jumped rails at a sharp curve. Five wrecked trucks carried soldiers. the boiler exploded. The engineer and fireman were killed, and six of the injured soldiers have since died.
In Waterbury Connecticut Mrs. John C Stack aged 27 perished when her clothing ignited near a kitchen stove while watching over her dead son Thomas. Her husband Thomas Stack suffered severe burns while trying to rescue her. other occupants escaped. Property loss was slight.
The remains of 200 or more people are being removed today from the tomb in St Josephs cemetery in East Chelmsford. The caskets will not be opened. The Chelmsford board of health urges interment without opening, in a letter dated March 13, 1902, signed by Dr Arthur G Scoboria, agent.
James Mason, a deaf mute, was sentenced to one year in the penitentiary after pleading guilty to stealing a Bible. He had hidden the Bible in bedclothes belonging to Nan ie Spears and forgot to return the clothing. Judge Miller donated $1 to a fund that bought Mason a Bible from the court.
Minority stockholders of Mount Rosa Company sue Woods Investment Company over alleged fraud since 1892 with a claim to mining property valued over 35 million dollars including the Gold Coin mine. A receivership and accounting of Mount Rosa funds and property disposition are requested.
Vienna reports say the state department doubts raising Austria Hungary minister Ladislaus Hengelmuller von Hengervar to ambassador and Robert S McCormick to ambassador. Austrian government says decision already settled awaiting dual parliament approval in May. Austrian foreign office welcomes the move and hopes for beneficial results for both nations.
Chicago packers dismiss reports that New York retail butchers are forming an opposition company to ship western livestock to New York and slaughter it there. They say no New York plant could handle the trade and that a proposed 1 million dollar capital would fail quickly.
A governess named Allairt who on Monday tried to shoot M Trepoff the Moscow prefect of police had been imprisoned in February for participating in student disturbances. She was released two days earlier by order of M Trepoff due to her health, and then attempted the life of the prefect.
In Lower Austria three of four missing tourists from a recent Alps ascent are found half frozen but alive. The fourth member of the expedition, previously reported by cable, was discovered dead.

He says China remains quiet after a recent treaty but fears disintegration possible as Britain Japan and the US back integrity while Russia and France seek division. He predicts Russian troops in Manchuria may stay under railway protection and Russia will retain Manchuria Mongolia and push a railway across Mongolia toward Pekin. He notes rumors of rebel bands in Kansu allied with Prince Tuan and potential activity in Shansi and Mongolia with Tuan’s stronghold at Nindshin.
Six hundred painters and carpenters in Greenwich and Port Chester walked out after failed talks between the Building Trades council and the Builders association. Wages were set at three dollars a day for an eight hour week, but contractors demanded that only union men work if they belonged to the Builders association. The union refused.
Benjamin Jones, a Portland machinist, died after being poisoned at the Hotel York in Seattle. A woman posing as his wife checked him in, left for a doctor, then did not return. He was found unconscious, later died in hospital. Letters show parents in Oskaloosa Iowa. he used the name J H Sacio.
An express train on the Canadian Pacific railway derailed at Arnesia Lake yesterday and toppled the embankment. Express Messenger Corrigan and Mail Clerk Legate were badly injured.
The Isaac Rees Coal Mining Co holdings in Western Kentucky and Tennessee, with railroads, steamboat lines, and Memphis and Paducah elevators, were sold for 500000 to a Chicago and New York syndicate. The buyers plan regional development and new trade routes to New Orleans and other gulf points, with further southern acquisitions anticipated.
In Portland on April 2 Thomas O Rourke a 67 year old gate tender for the Boston and Maine railroad yard fell from a wharf and drowned.

Providence April 2. Weavers at American Woolen company mills in Olneyville and Man ton join Moosup workers in opposing the two loom system. Moosup weavers vote to strike and await agent Hinchliffe. About 125 Moosup weavers, two Moosup mills with 65 and 61 looms, may widen action by April 15 if no settlement. Other Rhode Island and Massachusetts mills remain on strike.
Twenty eight hoisting engineers struck in Butte Montana over wage demand. Nine Amalgamated Copper Company mines closed and more than 3000 workers idle after rejection of a $1 a day wage increase. Ore value around $75,000 daily amid orderly stoppage.
The U S S Albatross docked in Honolulu from San Francisco under Commander Chauncey Thomas. On board were Dr C H Gilbert J O Snyder and W K Fisher of Stanford University and Prof Nutting from the University of Iowa to study fishes and marine vegetation. A quarter master Y Barnkle was washed overboard during rough seas around March 12. The vessel will stay about six days before resuming its exploring voyage around the islands.
Rome April 2 report says Henry White secretary of the U S embassy in London may replace George W L Meyer as ambassador. White has not received official word and is en route with his family from Florence to England amid chatter of Meyer's resignation.
Lake Pleasant New York April 2 B Frank Kathan, claiming legal title to Hamilton county sheriff, seized the jail last night while Locke’s guard was away. When Locke’s guard returned, Kathan held all doors locked and remained in possession throughout the night.
Memorial services were held in Victoria B C yesterday for the officers and crew of the missing sloop of war Condor. All the men of the navy attended.

Mitchell Gilbert fought a malicious destruction charge after a glass window was broken in a dispute over a meal at Antoine Gosselin’s restaurant, the case postponed to Thursday. James Noonan was found not guilty of assault and battery, while seven drunks were recorded in court.
Tests at Centralville city pumping station and boulevard plant show the system can exceed conduit and Centralville intake flow. About 11 to 13 million gallons moved through mains with a 2 million gallon surplus spilling into the river from boulevard wells. The mains were blown out for thorough cleaning, and the wells remained largely unmoved, suggesting ample supply in a major fire.

Frank Souza of Bent’s court injured his right index finger when caught in a carding machine at Boott Mills this morning. Two stitches weretaken at the Emergency Hospital.
A night alarm from box 35 at 9 45 Tuesday was unnecessary after a witness reported a chimney blaze on Law rence street. The chimney only threw a few sparks and caused no damage.
