Two youths driving a horse owned by James E. Freeman were thrown from the carriage on Gorham street at 10:30 pm. The animal fled to Lincoln street crossing where William Ferris and John Donohoe halted it. They then tried to retrieve the horse, but it dashed off again after a broken breeching, throwing Ferris out. The carriage crashed into a tree near the Gorham street engine house before the horse was finally stopped.
The gospel service returns as usual at the Young Women's Christian Association on Sunday afternoon at four o'clock with Miss Fannie Bennett of Boston as speaker. Doors open at 3.30. All girls and women are invited. An evening song service follows at 7.30 with Miss Bennett also speaking and special music. All girls welcome.
In Charleston South Carolina on April 1 fifteen prominent Lake City residents were slated for federal trial next week on charges tied to the lynching of Frazer Baker the local postmaster who had his child killed and the Lake City post office burned with its effects. The case marks the first federal lynching trial in the south and follows warnings being ignored by a band seeking to seize control of the post office.
In Bangor on April 1 a major Maine railroad transaction closes. The Bangor and Piscataquis dissolves, liquidating bonds of 1,250,000 and freeing Bangor of 900,000 in bonded debt. Bangor and Aroostook acquires the line and assumes the bonds.
Otis reports quiet conditions as American troops direct reconnoitering duty around Malolos and the railroad. Insurgents withdraw from a small surrounding area, while a portion of U S troops moves to a new position. Commanders express readiness for continued activity and report excellent army spirits.
Southampton April 1 Steamer Southwestern run ashore last night and took a hole in her hull while searching for bodies from the Stella wreck. She is owned by the same company as the Stella.
A funeral train carrying 150 unidentified Cuban dead left New York for Washington this morning. The train will unload, then return for a second trip.
A wholesale hardware firm Miller Schioss and Scott in San Francisco was wiped out by a fire last night. Loss estimated at 400000 dollars. The blaze started with unknown origin and leveled one of the Pacific coast's largest houses.

Exeter New Hampshire March 31 Prof Cilley long identified with Phillips Exeter academy for more than four decades died this morning from heart trouble induced by gout after a month of critical illness. Bradbury Longfellow Cilley born September 6, 1838 in Nottingham son of Joseph L and Lavina B Cilley his lineage includes Gen Joseph Cilley of the Revolution and Col Joseph Cilley who fought in the War of 1812 and served as a senator.
The passage traces Prof. Cilley's career from entering Phillips Exeter in 1851 to graduating Harvard in 1858. It notes brief service at the Albany academy and his 1859 appointment as professor of ancient languages at Exeter, marking a notable public life milestone.
Large quantity of wreckage including ship's papers and three lifeboats marked Marechal Lannes washed ashore on the Pembrokeshire coast. Marechal Lannes is believed lost after going aground at H.t and Barrel rocks near Small's Light.
Worcester March 31 P H Hennessey of this city defeated J G L Sheafe the leading man in the Boston public bowling alley tournament tonight in a 25 string match at candle pins for 100 a side The bowling was excellent the highest string 115 made by Sheafe Hennessey won the match by 166 pins.
At All Saints on Good Friday a large crowd heard a sermon on the cross and the varied responses to it from Jew and Roman, thief and sinner. The message urged bearing the cross with patience and sacrifice, likening it to Simon of Cyrene, and the call to follow Christ. Also notes on Meriam’s lecture, bakery sale, Parkhurst changes, and Literary Union gathering in Lowell.
Work on a new post office in North Chelmsford begins Monday morning. Charles E. Parkhurst of the C-acre village holds the contract for a one story building measuring about 20 by 26 feet on Main Street, on Postmaster Hall’s premises.

In Boston police court Judge Hadley fined Henry W. Garity, proprietor of the Farragut house, $100 for illegally keeping liquor. an appeal was taken. Theresa Garity was found not guilty. Prosecution and defense were represented by John J. Harvey and John J. Devine.
The register lists 83 in all with opera company members among them. A subsequent Sunday recorded 30 names with 19 from out of town. The defense offered no evidence and neither side presented argument.
George Fraro was arraigned for assault and battery on Ed ward Leborgne in police court this morning. Leborgne, after a physical confrontation outside Boyle's saloon, was struck and his leg broken by Fraro's ally Flare. Fraro found guilty and sentenced to four months in jail. other cases include embezzlement, drunks, and fines.
Eli Leblanc also known as Eli White was arrested on forgery charges after stealing two bank books owned by Arthur and Douglas Gardner from Gardner’s Prescott street piano store. He tried to cash using Arthur’s name at Five Cent Savings Bank with help from Isadore Doucet who was asked to present the Douglas book. Doucet signed his own name and was refused payment. Leblanc later signed Arthur Gardner’s name but payment was denied. He was found at the Shattuck block Prescott street where he rooms. He is about 20 and has prior break and enter arrests.
The Les Miserables alleys reopen at 2 o'clock after two weeks of closing for painting and repairs. The refurbished private alleys boast high finish and taste and rival any bowling plant in New England. Management plans a soon schedule of games with out-of-town clubs.
Bodies of Sergt Ralph B. Walker and Private Joseph L. Wallace arrived by train in Lowell on the 5 45 from New York harbor, placed under guard in sealed caskets with american flags, and to be interred under government orders.
