In Boston on March 31 a double death occurred in the Morse Buttonhole Machine Co building elevator shaft at Randolph and Harrison. John Reese, owner of the building and president of the Reese Buttonhole Machine Co, died after being found at the bottom of the shaft. A workman, John McGargan, was said to be setting the elevator and is believed killed. Reese, of Brookline, leaves a wife and two children. Night watchman John Wall witnessed Reese rushing to the shaft and crying out, then vanishing.
Opelika Alabama April 1 Four thousand Eagle and Phoenix mill workers in Columbus Georgia have been left destitute after wage cuts left barely enough to subsist. A further cut last Monday led to a work stoppage and the mills closing, leaving seven thousand people including families in destitute condition.
On Cottage Grove avenue a pickpocket seized a passenger's pocketbook then fled. Citizens pursued him and, facing capture, the Negro man drew a razor across his throat and died within minutes rather than be arrested.
William J. Pierce a veteran Chicago real estate dealer faces indictment for embezzling 12231 dollars from trust property. He reportedly lost the funds in speculative ventures.
Nashua April 1 Alonzo Wells known as the fire fiend was held in 6000 on two counts. He is to be examined as to his sanity in the probate court.
Havana dispatch reports Capt. Gen. Weyler requesting 40,000 additional troops with approval from War Minister de Acarraga. Spaniards reportedly defeat rebels under Maceo Guanes, claiming 72 killed and many wounded while insurgents continue surrendering in large numbers.
The New Grace Universalist church in the high lands was dedicated with Pastor Greene and President Capen addressing a thousand invited attendees. The ceremony featured a full choir, an elaborate dedicatory hymn, and a sermon on universal righteousness and the foundations of faith.

William White, about 50, fell on the post office steps while descending this morning. He previously fractured an arm on ice recently. An ambulance carried him to St. John's Hospital. He resides on Hill’s Black Middlesex Street.
A morning blaze at James McDowell’s home 45 Washington Street started behind a stove in the kitchen and spread through the partition to burn through the roof. Damages are about 100 dollars with H. C. Church & Son carrying the insurance.
Mrs A J Lynch hosted a large gathering at 97 Grand Street in honor of her daughter Mrs William Walker. Guests assisted by Misses Kanada Farrington Wright and Risteen. The program featured a vocal quartet and soloists, banjo numbers by Mr White of Boston, readings by Miss Hilda Lee Drew, and a silver coffee urn and ice pitcher presented to Mrs Walker during supper.

The Y P S C E held a chapel meeting to elect officers for six months. Perry Griffin was chosen president, Willard Parker vice president, Kate McKenzie recording secretary, George Allan treasurer, and Charles S Parnaude remained corresponding secretary. Committees were named and a sociable followed with Nellie Dickson chairing the social committee and John Davis coordinating the program.
About 5000 would-be attendees were shut out of the Grace Universalist dedication. The bazaar and festival follow the ceremony, opening tonight and running three evenings under the Ladies' Social Circle. An entertainment by many young people will accompany the event, touted as the year's largest church bazaar.
The Young Women s Christian Association hosts a Scottish evening led by Rev. Jas Alexander of Tewksbury. An original story may be read, Miss Bessie Leggat will sing Scotch airs, and other suitable music will be performed. The event is free and starts at 7 45.
