Record 60,000 Hunters to Take Part in New Mexico Big Game Season
Santa Fe reports a likely 55,000 to 60,000 licensed hunters will join New Mexico’s general big game season opening November 8. Last year 54,300 licensed hunters plus 1,700 from out of state hunted about 11,000 deer. State Game Warden Elliot Barker expects more resident licenses and more non resident licenses, with 7 to 20 percent not hunting deer. The season runs November 8 to 19 with one buck deer, a forked horn, one turkey and one bear as limits. Five special deer seasons exist, including archery starting October 18. Deer are in good condition statewide, though Carlsbad valley is very dry. Barker hopes for rain or snow before opening. The 1951 season had one fatality and several accidental shootings, with no misidentification shootings.
