Man Held For Mistreating Girl Seeks Help From Stranger
Robert Maldonado Ybarea is jailed in Lea County on mistreatment charges involving an 8 to 9 year old girl who was approached by him as she walked home from a music lesson. He allegedly lured her into a black 1949 Mercury and drove to a country road for about half an hour before returning her. The child escaped unharmed and reported the incident to her parents. A Tuesday hearing with Assistant District Attorney Joe A. Walton was planned.

Prison Board Seeks Funds for Higher Guard Payroll
Prison board chairman Wayne Collins says the next legislature will be asked to provide enough money to maintain security at the state penitentiary. The payroll has risen from 382000 to 500000 due to more guards and higher salaries. The board plans a 6.5 million dollar investment in a new prison south of Santa Fe, including 3 million from the prior legislature and 2 million to be authorized next session. A first phase contract will be let in about a month with 4.5 million dollars.

Cotton Crop Forecast Sets 15.596 Million Bales for 1953
