State Road 83 crash near Lovington claims Hershall L. McDowell 33 instantly as his 1953 Dodge rolled over five times at 12 50 Saturday. Passenger Virginia Smith 28 suffered internal injuries and cuts. The wreck followed a possible racing incident with reports of excessive speed. McDowell’s widow Maudine and four children survive. body to be shipped to Davidson Oklahoma.

Schools Enroll In Jr Red Cross In Lovington System
All Lovington schools complete enrollment in the American Junior Red Cross for the calendar year. Enrollment fees apply: 50 cents per elementary classroom and 1 dollar per 100 secondary students. Funds go to the local service fund for enrollment fees and local projects. Each elementary class gets a Junior Red Cross news issue in February. Secondary schools receive copies for every 100 students enrolled. Activities are decided by individual classrooms, including possible hospital gifts and community aid.

Reverend Davis Charged After Lovington Road Collision
Rev. Ralph Davis of Hobbs was charged with passing a car at an intersection after a Friday morning crash six miles south of Lovington. He and J. H. Gilmore, driving a 1953 Buick, were northbound when Gilmore started to turn onto Standolind Lease. Davis, in a 1953 Cadillac, said he was about 60 mph and failed to see Gilmore turning. Gilmore suffered a head laceration and neck soreness. Davis felt shaken and reported neck and shoulder soreness. Both cars were light green. Gilmore's Buick and Davis's Cadillac were damaged. Davis headed to the county jail to discuss transfers of three prisoners to the state pen at Santa Fe for terms of two to ten years. Gilmore has 25 years with Stanolind.
