Two fires Friday caused damage in separate homes. At Owens Trailer Courts Mr and Mrs L S McClure slept through the blaze until neighbors alerted them. damage confined to interior walls. Later a second alarm at 2 pm struck the residence of Mr and Mrs Paul Donahoe at 2nd Kingston. interior and personal belongings were badly damaged in a home owned by Mrs Lean Dye.
V M Chambers, who had been ill at his Lovington home for two weeks, was taken to Lea General Hospital after a sudden deterioration. By Wednesday he was reported much improved and sitting up.
Erma Sanchez aged 21 and Jimmy Archuleta aged 26, both of Lovington, with Pearl F. Burnett aged 66 of Eunice and O. M. Wells aged 68 of Augusta, Kansas, identified in the community notices.
Lovington Chamber of Commerce urges members to return ballots by November 13 for Board of Directors. Nominees include J. T. Easley Bluett Cotton V. Darden Hubert Gill Frank Coffman Lee Burt Dr Kenneth Osborne Chet Dotson L. C. Green Leo Jones and Leo Jones furni ture. Five write in spaces exist. Voting rules specify one vote per $25 dues and four votes per firm, with individuals entitled to one vote.
Ricky Winford won 10 dollars for guessing 30 232 pounds as the antenna weight of 600 feet. Donna Winkle took second prize with 30 222 and Truman Holdiman claimed third with 30 285. Seven additional winners each earned 25 dollars: C O Shirey Don Wallace W G Jordan Yvonne Elliott Mrs A C Ledet Tad Webber and A E Cook.
Here From Alaska visiting parents Mr and Mrs Bill Deats in Anchorage have been visiting his mother and father Mr and Mrs Harlan Deats in Abilene. They will return to Lovington in about two weeks and then head to Nevada where they plan to live. Bill is a pharmacist.
Lovington will officially open the Christmas season at 6 30 p m on November 26 with lights turned on across nine blocks from Main Street to surrounding intersections. Merchants plan extended hours to 9 p m and decorations aim to inspire homes to join in. About 1100 dollars has been raised to fund new stringers and lighting equipment.
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Barnett of Hobbs died shortly after birth at Lea General Hospital. Mary Sue Barnett passed at 10 p.m. Thursday. Graveside rites were held at Prairie Haven with Linwood Bishop officiating. Griffin Funeral Home handled arrangements. Survived by three grandparents, Mrs. Kelly Barnett of Purcell Oklahoma and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Walker of Knoawa Oklahoma.
A federal grand jury in Albuquerque acquitted Hugh Wagley, former cashier at Lea County State Bank in Hobbs, of charges he made false entries to defraud. After about 90 minutes of deliberation, the jury of 2 women and 10 men returned an innocent verdict, with witnesses noting Wagley's good character and defense arguing others could be guilty.
Lovington Leader reporter Miss Flora Hood travels to Norfolk Virginia after the death of her father C. W. Hood aged 85 a retired Baptist minister. She plans to return this week after catching a plane from Midland.
Mrs Ben Allen of Hobbs has returned to her home after five months of traveling.
An 81 year old aristocrat and top Nazi, Konstantin Von Neurath, was released from Spandau Prison Berlin after serving more than half of a 15 year term. He was freed due to failing health as Russians urged release because of age and condition. His daughter Winnifred Von Mackenson met him and drove him away.
Mrs. Rosenburg was entertained on a 72nd birthday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Harris on Wednesday November 3. A large group of friends played dominoes and 42, gave gifts, and watched film of the Harris home dedication. Refreshments of cake cocoa and coffee were served.
Herbert Lee Gerald was fined 200 dollars in police court after a DWI charge was reduced to reckless driving and disorderly conduct.

Farmers and residents report a legal action filed November 5 in the district court seeking 330,060 in damages over the burial of an infant. The suit names J. B. Green owner of Green Chapel Hobbs and alleges the baby was moved from a white cemetery to the colored cemetery at Prairie Haven without proper authorization. Parents Laniel and I-an Austin, residing in Tatum, claim loss of burial dignity and emotional distress. The case details show burial costs and punitive damages requested as the defendants defend their actions under cemetery rules and city health guidance.
Ft Sumner edges Lovington 13 to 12 after a second period conversion broke a 0 0 tie. Lovington struggled to convert in the final periods while deer hunting chatter and local revival plans fill the back half of this rowdy piece.
Corporal Kelly H. Click Jr. son of Mr and Mrs Kelly Click of 1105 West Madison was promoted to corporal while serving in Korea with the 7th Infantry Division. He is a survey chief with the 49th Field Artillery Battalion Battery B. Click arrived overseas in November 1953 as Bayonet division trains for peak combat readiness from Pusan to the Yalu river.
Robert Orona son of Mr and Mrs Agustin Orona of Humble City died at 8 a m Friday in a Hobbs hospital He was born May 14 1954 Services were held in St Helena s Catholic Church Saturday at 10 Interment was in Prairie Haven
Mrs. Ocie Pearl Oliver died Friday morning at 8 o clock in a Hobbs hospital after an illness of about a week. She was 68, born in Alabama, and had lived in Hobbs about 10 years. Her husband died about three months ago. Funeral services are at 1 p.m. today at First Methodist Church Hobbs with Rev E W Worden and Rev Leroy Sewell officiating. Burial in Prairie Haven. Griffin Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Survivors include six daughters and three sons, one sister, two brothers, 29 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Two couples from Hobbs obtained licenses last week in Carlsbad. Doris Nell Green 18 married Clarence Andrew Smith Jr. of Hobbs. Geneva Jackson 42 wed Jessie Henry 49, both residents of Hobbs.
Durer Alston of Tatum was rushed to Lea County Hospital Monday after suffering a heart spell.
Bud Bevers remains in Lea County Hospital Holts with neck and head injuries after his 1954 Buick rear ended a turning semi trailer on the Tatum highway near Mc Donald. Clyde Loveless of Brownfield drove the truck and was uninjured. Both vehicles were badly damaged.
Otis McCrary and Merlin Ainsworth, both Hobbs residents, pleaded guilty to burglary in Carlsbad. Each received 24 to 30 months in prison after being caught by a Loving vigilante group as they tried to break into a local mercantile store. The group had intensified patrols following a wave of burglaries in Loving and nearby towns.
The Rotary Club met in the Fellowship Hall of the First Methodist Church on Wednesday Nov. 3. Rev. Ira Williams pastor of the First Methodist Church of Santa Rosa spoke on a respect for one another and religion. Williams was introduced by Rev. E. E. Hamilton, who was introduced by Larry Crouse. Visitors included John Moore El Paso W. D. Wedge Seattle Howard Cohes Albuquerque Hank Hazen Charles H. Benson and Orville Owens Lovington. Visiting Rotarians were H. F. Whitley Emmett Green Tatum and Oliver Widman Eunice.
Epsilon Sigma Alpha announces a rummage sale set for Saturday November 13 on the Court House lawn. Proceeds will support local activities and scholarships.
Mr and Mrs Wayne Mickey Mr and Mrs Jack Jackson and Joe Joplin attended the homecoming at Abilene Christian College last weekend.
Purina Research Farm at Gray Summit Missouri hosted about 300 farmers from Lovington and surrounding area last week as they toured mills and research laboratories in St Louis. The 738 acre facility focuses entirely on farm research projects in livestock and poultry feeding and management attracting thousands of visitors annually.
