District Judge John R. Brand sentenced Q. C. Tillman to 2 to 3 years in the state penitentiary after Tillman was found guilty in a case centered on a September 26 home invasion. Mrs. Fowler testified through tears about being awakened by a masked intruder who forced her from bed and into a shack demanding money.
Czech born bass Jan Ghur, a Curtis Institute graduate with SF Opera ties, performs in Lovingston on Thursday November 5 at 8 00 P M. The program blends Handel to Moussorgsky with English light pieces and sea shanties.
New Mexico CIO members form Southeastern New Mexico CIO-PAC with Hobbs as headquarters. F. H. Mitchell elected president, H. A. Harrison as vice president, Mrs. J. Skelton secretary treasurer, and R. B. A. Nash drove 12 miles west on the Artesia Highway last week and smashed the front end of a car owned by Texas Co. The collision occurred during a single vehicle incident reported in the local pages.

General George Marshall of the United States receives the Nobel Peace Prize for 1953 for his postwar Marshall Plan. The prize for 1952 goes to Albert Schweitzer, noted philosopher and medical missionary in Africa.
Barr is alleged to have been named as a radar secrets thief from Fort Monmouth New Jersey by Greenglass. John Rogge, attorney for David Greenglass, said Greenglass told investigators Barr was named to him by confidants not identified. Barr fled the United States in 1945 and was linked to William Perl, who faced perjury charges.

Two teenage airmen were arrested at Clovis Air Force Base on suspicion of kidnapping a 19 year old Hobbs mother and her young daughter. The pair were reportedly forced into a car near a Halloween party and driven by the suspects to Seminole Texas where they were released unharmed.
Lea County Board of Commissioners named Ravenelle Tatum county assessor on Monday with unanimous vote. Widowed by Roy L. Tatum, her late husband who served a second term, she is mother to three children under 12 and lives on a farm near Lovington. She has long worked in county offices and in the assessors office since his first term.
The administration will move carefully before reorganization of the agriculture department. Presidential assistant Sherman Adams says the plan is needed but no final decision will be made until a thorough study of all recommendations and objections is completed.

Mexican workers must be paid at least the domestic prevailing rate for similar work and wage increases must take effect immediately.

Two Buffalo men unearthed a button found during a relic dig at a historic fort site in Fort Erie Ontario. They tested the object with a fluid and examined it with a magnifying glass, concluding it was a modern Buffalo department store button with no historic value.

Airman 1st Class James A. Mize arrived home October 19 after a 14 week tour in Korea and Japan. He will have 30 days leave before reporting to Selfridge Air Base in Detroit. James Tip Hall age 55 was buried in Tatum after services at Tatum Methodist Church led by Rev. Joe Bickley. Born in California July 15 1898 he died October 29 1953 at home. Survivors include widow Lois Hall three daughters Bell Child Nina Hall and Mrs John Lynch and Mrs Nina Hall of Tatum and son James Hall Jr of Dallas. Casketbearers listed and Lions Club members served as honorary pallbearers. Hall owned Tips Bar in Tatum and is interred at Tatum Cemetery.
