A special Town Trustees meeting decided to build a model incinerator near the town hall for merchants to view and set standards. The group also funded a paving reseal with 2900 dollars from the parking meter fund and approved a sidewalk setback ordinance to place the inside edge two feet from the property line. The next meeting is Tuesday April 7.
A fire at the Harden Hotel in Hobbs early Tuesday damaged two rooms with estimates between ten and fifteen thousand dollars. One guest, who allegedly started the blaze by smoking in bed, suffered minor smoke injuries and was treated at Sea General hospital. The night bellboy alerted staff, and three engines responded, with firefighters on site until six A.M. Wednesday.
District Judge John R. Brand granted several divorces at the March 24 term. Cases include Willie Mae Moody vs Charlie Moody and Anna Mae Mosley vs Melvin Pete Mosley. Also listed are Natoma Wagnon vs Arnold Wagnon, Jackie Janelle Murdock vs John Lewis Murdock Jr., Mabel Clara Brown vs Clinton Jessie Brown, Willie Evans Beard vs Delores Beard, Wyvern Ols vs Martha Ann Ols.
The 1953 Wildcats football schedule starts September 18 with Jal at Lovington. The slate includes games at Hobbs and Eu nice, a home Oct 1 visit from Por tales Rams, Denver City Oct 23, a Oct 31 trip to Tucumcari, and Nov 6 Ft Sumner plus Nov 14 NMMI at home.
James R Bridges State Plumbing Inspector for Lea County resumes duties after an operation in an El Paso Hospital for a back injury. He was in El Paso for two weeks.
1326 Lovingtonians were chest X rayed and 1078 given blood tests per Carl Crutchfield, chairman. In Tatum 395 X rays and 259 blood tests. Mallamar reports 50 X rays and 43 blood tests. Unit 2 team including Walter Cummings and E H Morrison left for Eunice then Jal.
Fire department responded to a blaze at Jim's Cabinet Shop on South Love Street around five Tuesday morning. Back of the building and contents suffered fire and water damage. the structure belongs to the American Legion and was insured. Suspected smoking may have started the fire. no injuries reported.
Fred Bonner sues Margaret Bonner for divorce. Sacra Bros. sue E O Williams for 814.39 and 57.84 costs. Ralph H. Thornton sues Bate man and Whittsitt for compensation. Jack Owen Dye sues Thompson Carr Inc for compensation. James B. Ewing sues Bonnie Dell Ewing for divorce. Frances Dale and Grace Levens sue Ralph Lannon E H Hanson et al for quiet title. Mrs C D McCannaughaf sues Lewis Derrick appeal. Judgment 95.00 plus 5.50 costs.
The Lea County Bar Association will honor its president Judge John R. Brand with a dinner Friday night at the Country Club in Hobbs. All attorneys and their wives, the clerk reporters and their wives in Eddy and Chaves Counties are invited. Special guests will be Judges C Roy Anderson and George T Harris with their wives. The affair will begin at 6 p m.
Lovington Girl Scouts and Brownies lead the Southeast New Mexico cookie sale, with Wednesday reports showing Lovington surpassing its 129 dozen goal and selling over 150 dozen. The regional contest covers Lea, Chaves, Eddy, Lincoln and Otera counties, with prizes for top groups and most funds directed to Camp Mary White and local troop activities.
Rufus McCrory filed charges of assault and battery against Floyd Hughes on Wednesday morning. The men live at 710 South Fourth. Hughes allegedly ran amuck and beat McCrory, prompting roadblocks as about 25 people waited at the courthouse north door with townspeople commenting. Undersheriff James Robinson said efforts to locate Hughes continued.
C C Yearwood campaign chair of the New Mexico Society for Crippled Children says Rainbow Girls will assist in the Easter Seal Drive with house to house canvassing planned this weekend and next week. He notes 91.7 percent stays in New Mexico for local services to handicapped youngsters while 8.3 percent supports a nationwide program.
Jones Bros Co received the low bid of 794.86 for floor covering in the courthouse hall and basement rooms. Another bid came from Jim's Floor Covering Co at 855.96.
In Roswell districts, Hannagan issues a memo requiring a duly authorized peace officer at all dances. The move follows fatalities in a Denver City Highway crash that killed four, including Johnny and Michael Cheek and Mrs. Cheek’s relatives. Fundraising for the Cheek family tops $1,100 as flowers give way to funeral relief.
Olin Humphreys of Loving ton school faculty was elected to the Southeast New Mexico Education Association executive committee at its Carlsbad convention. Ross Kendall Hobbs Intermediate School principal was elected president and William Beckman from South Hobbs elementary school was named an executive committeeman. Hobbs was chosen as the 1954 convention city with Dr. Kenneth F. Perry as principal speaker. over 1,100 educators from Lea, Eddy and Chaves counties attended.
The sixth annual New Mexico Boys State will be held at Cocorro on the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology campus from June 7 to 14. Lovington High School will send three delegates Earl Hester Bill Shivers and Edd Mitchell with alternates Ronnie Moore Joe Phillips and Edd Nail selected for leadership character scholarship and service.
Georgia L. Lusk the vice chairman of the War Claims Commission in Washington, famed former Lovington schools teacher and Lea County superintendent from 1925 to 1928, advocates liberal war claims rulings for prisoners and churches. She returns to political life only if opportunities arise in the U.S. House, while noting the commission may cease by 1955 after processing over 83 million dollars in claims.
Mrs. Johnnie Lee Boyd, 36, was shot by Jesse Williams 35, her Hobbs boyfriend, outside Recreation Hall on East Main. Williams surrendered later and faces first degree murder charges. Funeral set for Church of God in Christ Hobbs with burial in South Hobbs Cemetery. Survivors include husband D C Boyd and five children.
Two fugitives from Alamogordo jail, James C. Williams and Bryan K. Patterson, were captured in Plains Texas after Orville Wimberly alerted deputies. The men waived extradition and were returned to Lea County jail. Williams is linked to the death of May Della Sanford, whose decomposed body was found near Alarosa.
Three volunteers and eight draftees depart Monday for Army induction. Volunteers are Lidado Madrid Holquin of Leevington, Roland Chester Daly Hobbs, Roosevelt Carpenter Hobbs. Drafted include Boyce Don Vaughn and Antonio Enriquez of Levington, Curtis Dale Hall Tatrum, Estes Gilbert Shivers Jr., Eunice, Jessie Milton Bilbrey Crossroads, Melvin Charles Thomason Hobbs, James William Matt Monument, and Joe Howard Newberry Jal.
The Loving ton National Bank announces the resignation of H J Punk Burns as President effective July 1 1953 due to health. J W Smith will succeed Burns with Winfred H Carlile named assistant. The bank has grown from about 1 million to over 6 million in deposits since Burns joined in 1948.
The North Sea Chapter of the American Red Cross reports $1,749.76 collected toward its 1953 drive. Mrs. A. J. Berkshire appeals for continued donations with a goal to turn in funds by next Wednesday and urges mothers to contribute at least the $4.85 per pint cost of collecting and processing blood.
