The Lovington Chamber of Commerce backs a county plan to remove the 1912 mulberry trees that line the courthouse lawn. Officials say the trees are unsanitary, litter berries, attract flies and birds, and should be replaced with modern landscaping.
The Lovington Chamber of Commerce calls a Monday night meeting on February 12 at 11 Lovington Fire Station. President Hubert Maddux urges full merchant participation to fund and plan projects for the year. Secretary Fletcher G. Stapp resumes duties after a brief resignation, with noted interest from former publisher Logan Beal. A long member list includes Lovington Bank, Lovington Press, Lea County schools, and numerous local businesses and firms.
Lovington officials hear concerns over unsanitary mulberry trees around the courthouse. Custodian Jess Benson says berries drop and attract flies, complicating lawn spraying and posing a potential danger to children. Chamber of Commerce manager F. S. Stapp supports removal but a formal written recommendation is pending. Benson suggests tree removal by stump treatment and root decay.
Lovington residents will view spring fashions at the Lea Theatre on March 15 at 8 30 p m marking Lovington's first fashion show in three years. The event features The Miniver Story on screen with local models from The Fashion Shop Specialty Shop Arledge and Tatum and Beauty Shops shaping Easter outfits for all ages.
Judge George T. Harris opened district court with continued sessions through Wednesday March 5. The final report in the foreign will of O. P. Douglas was approved along with the final report in the estate of J. B. Gibbs. W. W. Virtue Int. won judgment against Granville D. Lassiter for 917.72 plus costs. Lassiter owns the La Miradora in Hobbs. Earl F. Gray received a default judgment from Mary Elvaretta Gray. Higginbotham Bailey Co. earned 1160.55 against W. L. Earls and Thelma Earls, former operators of Thelma's Dress Shop in Hobbs. Ray H. Gipson won divorce from Ina Rose Gipson. Jenave Marshall won divorce from Robt. W. Marshall with custody of the minor granted to the mother.
Civil docket in J P Court lists Carl Small as plaintiff against Leon Rice and J T Guinn for entry and unlawful detainer. Filed in March.
At a Monday county meeting in Lovington, tension rose between Commissioner Carl Denson of Hobbs and reporter Horace Gore of the Hobbs Daily Flare and Lovington Leader over access to documents and papers. Denson ordered Gore to sit and warned against removing papers, while Gore pressed for permission to examine them. The dispute continued as the court house custodian sought approval to remodel the sheriff’s home and Sheriff Charles Trimble, amid discussions with Max Edwards, began handling Gore’s request for a permit.
The Lea County Selective Service has moved to the southeast third floor offices once used by the draft board in World War II. Hobby Gann presented to the Commissioners and obtained permission from Judge Roy C. Anderson of Carlsbad. Attorneys have used the space as consultation rooms in recent months.
The clerk's office collected fees totaling 1357.40 during February, recording the financial intake for the period.
Eunice residents seeking a new school board election gave up after the District Attorney's office in Hobbs said the law was too vague to provide grounds for protest. Max Edwards traveled to Santa Fe to confer with the Attorney General, and with no fraud shown, action was not possible. The women plan to organize a parent and teachers association to address local issues.
Cotton traders across the South oppose a government ceiling of 45.76 cents a pound on raw cotton. State officials warn of disastrous consequences and black market growth. Dallas leader A Starke Taylor heads plans to appeal to Congress with support from Texas Alabama Carolinas and Georgia trade leaders. Southern ag commissioners favored ceiling prices on cotton products rather than raw cotton.

Judge Roy C. Anderson will open District Court in Lovington on March 19. First cases include Pat K Farrar et al v L Morgan West et al and Firemans Fund v James A Tabb plus C I T Corporation v Wayne Bryant et al and Charlie D Thompson v Osa Mae Thompson.
Nowell improved and able to be up briefly after a very serious operation. He has visited his drugstore on several occasions in the past week and is slowly regaining strength after illnesses.
W S Dean 84 of Lovington died Tuesday morning at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 30 p m Thursday in Smith Yarbro Funeral Home Chapel with Garnie Atkisson minister in charge. Dean was born April 11 1867 in Central Picken County South Carolina and came to Lea County in 1912. He started Dean Hardware March 20 1917 and the firm is now led by son Robert W Dean. He married Mary Edna Lee in 1887 and is survived by five children 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Interment will be in Lovington Cemetery beside his wife.
A district attorney notes unlawfully paid prison feeding costs and tells Lea County officials how to reclaim or repay mispaid funds. In Milwaukee a traffic light sign is cited as evidence of limits on mileage reimbursements. Deputy and sheriff mileage totals are itemized, showing several checks just under or slightly over the $200 limit with small reductions to comply. total February deputy milage amounts to 1397.06 and meals cost 41.70.
County extension agent T. C. Perkins and assistant agent Frank Walker will spend Friday and Saturday March 9 and 10 in Vaughn attending a wool grading and sheep classification school. The New Mexico Extension Service conducts the session with Ivan Watson and Bill Snyder teaching.
The District Court will begin its April session on April 2 before Judge George T. Harris. Four cases are listed for the two day session including W. B. Bright versus Davidson Drilling Co and Charlie D. Thompson versus Osa Mae Thompson. On April 3, J T. Acrey versus Guly Oil Corporation and A. Sex Cannon versus Bob Johnson Drilling Co. are scheduled.
