Artesia New Mexico February 24 Sperry and Lukins purchase 125 acres near Dayton to test for oil. Oil and gas have appeared in the district with artesian wells. The partners expect a test well to 1500 or 2000 feet may yield oil. E R Gesler has left for Douglas with several drilling contracts.
A large crowd gathered at J D Grahams residence Saturday night despite early unfavorable weather. The party included newly married Wilkes Glascock and Miss Fexas Shepard. Attendees enjoyed music, singing, games, and other amusements until near midnight.
J A Brown of Brown Dorsey Dorsey represents the Modern Order of Praetorians of Dallas establishing a local council. The order, 14 years old, claims exclusive United States standing for limited payment certificates and owns a sixteen story Dallas headquarters.
A crowd of children gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Graham on February 28 to celebrate the birthdays of Mastess Mason and J. D. Graham. After refreshments, the little guests departed in good spirits, wishing Mason and J. D. merry birthdays. Barbara Lee and Bertha assisted.
The New Mexico State Democratic Convention at Santa Fe favored free textbooks for grammar schools. The News endorses the plan as sound public policy and urges immediate action to end existing textbook contracts. It argues New Mexico spends more on books than any other state and calls for better, clearer texts.
J W Dunn learned on the 21st that his mother was very ill in Big Springs. He reached Big Springs the next day about an hour before she died, unconscious at arrival. Two sisters, Mrs Charles Shropshire and Mrs F A Howell, were present. another sister died earlier from pneumonia and was buried on the 22nd. Memory of her cheerful guidance remains with the family.
