The chamber of commerce announces a general membership meeting set for July 2. Members are urged to attend to discuss upcoming events, initiatives, and community business concerns.
Bill Clark and P T Clark of Hobbs appeared in District Court at Lovington to answer a motion to show cause why their properties should not be placed in receivership. Mrs Irene Clark seeks division of more than two million dollars in properties claiming duress and lack of legal representation at divorce. A stipulation bars disposing of assets except for maintenance and debts, with briefs to come on foreign judgments on New Mexico properties.
The New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque will crown a State Fair Queen for the second time. The event runs September 29 to October 7 with a winner announced by publicity director Pat Hill and last year’s queen Wilma Vaughn of Clovis present. Contenders are 16 to 19 year old single county entrants judged 50 percent on personality and 50 percent on horsemanship.
Village Trustee Cecil Nickel said the first two connections to the new sewer system were made Tuesday at the Nickel property with licensed plumbers. He predicted a building boom once a water system joins the sewer. Nickel, in Lovington on business, added Tatum was rushing and looked good.
Mrs L C Crutchfield, an Old Folks Day originator and board member, read the memorial honoring members who died since 1950. Donald W Estes USN son of Mr and Mrs W T Estes of Lovington NM has been advanced in rate to seaman while serving with U S Fleet Activities Yokosuka JapanHe entered naval service on August 16 1950 and trained at the U S Naval Training Center San Diego before entering the Navy He is a Lovington High School graduate
P H Harris spoke briefly at the Old Folks Day gathering to explain how to obtain a Rural Utilities Service telephone loan. He noted 300 applications are needed before papers go to Washington and that a $5.00 application fee would be refunded less processing costs.
A new card style postal money order system begins July 1 1951. It uses punched regional numbers and tabulating machines to speed processing. Existing notes and blue paper forms are retired. orders are payable at any post office or Federal Reserve Bank with regional verification at 12 offices.
R. C. Hayes brother of Barnie Hayes of Hayes Plumbing Co in Lovington is now a member of the Lovington Police force. This brings the total to four policemen the most that has ever been on the Lovington force. Others are Chief of Police Joe Black Ernest Gilman Ed Carr and Joe Price.
Mr and Mrs Frank Selman of Hobbs attended the Leech funeral in Seminole last Sunday after the death of the former local resident.
The Gospel Singers of Lea County performed at Prairieview Church on Old Folks Day June 24, with two singing sessions. Rev. Walter Walker opened with prayer and John Shultz led the opening song, followed by welcom ing remarks from Mrs. La Fara Harbison Phil lips. Various local residents from Hobbs, Tatum, Lovington and Eunice gave talks and music selections.
Mr and Mrs Harry Watkins have returned to Lovington after moving from Lovington to Odessa Texas.
The Lovington volunteer firemen hosted a barbecue behind the fire station at 7:30 p.m. on June 25. About 100 people attended, including firemen, their wives and guests, who enjoyed barbecue beans and soft drinks.
President Truman designates July 22 to 28, 1951 as National Farm Safety Week urging farm families to adopt safe practices in work, travel, and living. Extension Service agents and 4-H clubs will support campaigns to reduce farm accidents and losses nationwide.
A June notices page records numerous matchings and marriages from Monahans Hobbs and surrounding towns. Pairs include Eranda Ritter and Joe Perryman both of Monahans age 18 and 28, Dorothy Harvard and Robert Hooker of Paint Bayton ages 16 and 26, and many others across Texas towns like Hobbs Eldorado Snyder Big Spring and Midland with ages ranging from 16 to 53. The list includes first and last names with ages and home towns, reflecting a community notice of unions and intentions.
Deputy U. S. Marshal Dave Fresquez of Roswell arrived in Hobbs on Wednesday to serve the hot oil indictments on five Hobbs men. A. M. Rose, Hobbs attorney, arranged bonds for two defendants, Jack S. Little and Roy Moseley of Humble Oil and Refining Co. Little is district superintendent. Each faced two indictments: Violation of the Connally Act and conspiracy to violate it, and conspiracy to defraud the United States and commit offenses against it. Rose said bonds of $5,000 each were posted or would be recorded with bondsmen named later. Little resides in Humble Camp, Moseley on the Federal Bowers lease.
Funeral services for Harry Vonley Burkett 41 will be held at 3 p m at First Baptist Church Hobbs following his death after a tire explosion injury He came to Hobbs from Post Texas survived by widow Ola Fay and twin sons aged 10 plus parents and multiple siblings The service will be conducted by Rev Earl Cleveland with burial at Prairie Haven Green service in charge
Magnolia defeats league leading Mallamar 6 to 2 in a late report. The win creates a first half tie for first place, with a full game recap slated for Tuesday's Leader after late-breaking results missed Thursday's edition.
Mrs. A. D. Sawyer of Crossroads says Tatum and Crossroads raised 402.14 to fund the defunct Democratic party. She collected advance at Tatum to gather funds from the common people.
