Attorney Bob Ward challenged jury composition in Bailey and Robinson cases. Judge Anderson vacated both first degree murder trials scheduled for the current term. Bailey and Robinson had been set for trial this term with court appointments in place.
Members of the Lea County Central Committee were elected across precincts including Crossroads Caprock Pitchfork and Hobbs with lists of officers such as Mrs A G Sawyer Walter Anderson J M Brown Rudolph Houston and many others. Lovington and Artesia chamber leaders convened in Artesia on June 14 to form the Highway 83 Association. Attendees from Welch Seagraves Denver City Lovington Mall 11mar Artesia Loco Hills Hope Elks Mayhill Cloudcroft La Luz and Alamogordo drafted temporary officers and directors. A June 28 meeting will craft bylaws and July will elect permanent officers.
A letter from E L Billingsley Freight Traffic Manager Texas and Pacific Railway outlines a schedule of tomato freight rates from Lovington to Texas points. Adopted after a June 20 meeting in Lovington these rates aim to save Lea County shippers money and boost competitiveness this season. Rates shown apply to 100 pounds per carload.
Lea County PMA oversees the $50 000 Agricultural Conservation Program funds aimed at maximizing soil saving building and water conserving practices. Chairman James F Robinson says the county committee protects taxpayer funds and requires prior approval to ensure farmers understand requirements.
C. T. Grable praised the inaugural Kid's Rodeo in Lovington FFA as a success. Lovington town attorney G. T. Hanners has resigned and town council fills the vacancy naming Robert W. Ward as his successor. The move follows formal action by the council in a routine municipal record.
Lovington Fire Department answered a Friday call to extinguish a grass fire two miles north of Auxiliary Airfield Buckeye. Ranchers and oilfield workers had partial control before arrival. A second blaze was found about 12 miles west while crews worked the first.
Heidel remains Lovington Chamber of Commerce president as board action on his resignation never occurred. He stays active in promoting Lovington and members did not want him to resign.
A. A. Allen of Dallas Texas has purchased the Farmers Gin from Lubbock Cotton Oil Co after foreclosure. Allen has twenty years in ginning and arrives from Dallas where he served as service engineer for Murray Gin Co. He is remodeling the Lovington facility and will start operations this season with his family relocating to Lovington.
Ray Rodgers newly named Democratic chairman says he has no objection to the re appointment of David Chavez as Federal judge of Pueblo Rico. Rodgers who managed the campaign for governor John Miles against Chavez adds we have no animosity and if he wants his job back there is no reason to block it.
Construction of a new church auditorium in Lovington began Thursday June 15. The cinder block structure costs 27000 dollars and aims for a 60 to 90 day completion. Existing adobe building to be redecorated into ten classrooms. new auditorium 46 by 80 feet seats 360. includes two classrooms two dressing rooms minister study baptistery nursery with viewing window and amplified sound. Foreman Tom Hunt of Loop Texas. Kennedy Electric Co. handles heating cooling wiring and plumbing.
Garnie Atkisson has been named minister of the Lovington Church of Christ after eight months in Lovington. He arrived from Carlsbad where he served with Hillcrest Church of Christ. Under his leadership the Lovington congregation began building a new church structure.
Tuesday night marked the start of Lovington Public Schools Summer Recreational Program with Larry Crouse directing Folk Games on lighted tennis courts behind the High School Gym from 7 to 9 pm. The program invites ages 6 to 60 on Tue and Thu evenings for beginner and experienced players, reporting 150 children enrolled in the first week, including 24 girls and 20 boys in swimming lessons at Easley Lakes pool.
Boy Scout Troop No 44 held its regular meeting at the Scout Hut Monday night with about 20 boys present. Lovell Culp was elected to serve as quartermaster, and the gathering included scoutmaster Lovall Kloustermeyer and assistant scoutmaster E H Turnipseed. No other major business was reported.
Miss Pat Kizer of Lovington served as a delegate to Girls State in Portales last week with 142 girls from 82 communities. Mrs R E Seeling of Las Vegas directed the camp, assisted by Mrs E L Mercier Albuquerque and Mrs Nile Kjellston Hot Springs plus Mrs W O Dunlap Tatum. Participants formed four cities named for New Mexico ranges. Marylyn Tidmore of Clovis spoke to the assembly. Instruction covered city county and state government.
Mr and Mrs Bob Stone return home from a vacation. Mr Stone is employed by Gulf Research. Mr and Mrs James Cook attended the funeral of Mrs Ethel Caldwell on Sunday and visited Portales with Mr and Mrs Dow Wood, the Caldwell’s relatives.
Hobbs received a downpour lasting over an hour on Tuesday with Lovington noting only a spray. The rain extended to Humble City but remained within Hobbs city limits on the west, affecting nearby areas modestly.
Lea County seniors and former residents gather Sunday June 25 at Prairieview School House for Old Folks Day. Registration is open to anyone over 60 with no membership fee. Prizes honor the oldest attendees, longest married couple, and distant travelers. a courthouse bus helps attendees reach Prairieview. Howard Hamilton oversees the barbecue.
Virgil Hillman Jordan of Lovington New Mexico received the Bachelor of Laws at the University of Virginia graduation marking the university’s 125th year. Colgate W Darden Jr president conferred degrees on 936 graduates in the class of 1950, the largest in the university’s history. Dr Anton J Larsson of the University of Chicago spoke. Graduates hailed from 36 states, the District of Columbia and six foreign countries.
New Mexico ginners from across the state met in Ruidoso on Saturday to form the New Mexico Cotton Ginners Association. The group will affiliate with the National Association to aid farmers and ginners. Leon Rice of the Lovington Co-Op Gin was elected to the first board, with C. W. Lewis of Deming, J. B. Greer of La Union, Earl Compton, and J. W. Jones Jr. and J. P. White Jr. of Roswell also named directors.
The Ft Worth trippers spoke warmly about Our Town and mingled with local business men in Evington for two hours. They then went to the Llano Cocktail Lounge where they enjoyed cocktails and entertainment.
Household Supply in Lovington marks its fourth anniversary this week with a store-wide sale through July 1. The business traces back to Clyde Lawson and Lawson Supply, then L. L. Beadle, now owned by David Erwin and Hank Hazen, popular locally for civic involvement. An invitation invites all to visit during the anniversary events.
