A large crowd attended a Sunday evening party at the home of F G Sheerunday. Rev Cunningham led a view contest for the young ladies and young men classes, followed by punch, cake, fortune telling peanuts, and a gypsy tent in the yard with prophecies of happiness and trouble. Music by local young ladies was praised.
Heavy rain lingers over Lovington and counties keeping farmers out of fields for days with more wet weather expected. Despite the delay, many report strong crop prospects and a lively cattle and sheep market as trading circles respond to the moisture. A shipwreck survivor tale interjects with a hostile humor moment about wages and a surprising punch line.
Ithaca papers report a new automobile law effective June 1 1913 setting license fees by horsepower from 2 to 12 dollars, requiring owner registration with the secretary of state and issuance of a distinctive number and plate, with dealer licenses priced at 12 dollars yearly and enforcement by peace officers. It also imposes penalties for underage, unlicensed, intoxicated drivers and mandates aid after accidents.
Pecan Valley News notes Eddy County residents will vote June 21 in four towns Artesia Carlsbad Lovington and Hope on establishing county high schools. If approved the schools would serve regional areas and offer free attendance for county pupils with Artesia and Carlsbad expanding their existing systems and Hope and Lovington adding education options.
Mr. Crockett reports fine rains in his area and says farmers are very busy this morning.
J H Cornett of Lovington departs en route to Jacksonville Fla to represent New Mexico Jurisdiction C at the Woodmen of the World sovereign convention. Delegates from New Mexico Arizona and Texas travel by special train June 5 from Dallas to Tulston then New Orleans for organized hospitality and sightseeing. Cornett shows a Lovington banner and plans to welcome Carlsbad at future national meetings.
Thursday afternoon the couple welcomed two fine boys in a birth announcement. Both children were reported healthy and were named by their parents with gratitude for the new additions to the family.
Last Saturday evening the Commercial Club met at ex Wesley McGallasters office to discuss town matters. The group planned Roswell club hospitality about the 23rd, an annual barbecue with prizes for garden produce and grains, street cleaning, park shade-tree maintenance, and buying hose for new waterworks plugs.
