Residents react to Truman's congressional address with urgency and doubt. Army and Navy Reserve members show strongest responses while shortages emerge, prices rise, and buying booms. Volunteers falter, leaders warn, and reserves weigh personal costs of enlistment and sacrifice.
Federal Judge Carl Hatch refuses to dismiss charges against State Police Chief Hubert Beasley, State Patrolman I E Salazar, former Dona Ana County Sheriff A L Happy Apodaca and Roy Sandman for torturing suspect Wesley Byrd in the Ovida Crickett Coogler murder inquiry. Trial set after the September 12 petit jury, with bonds posted at 5000 dollars. The ruling upheld the Civil Rights Statute application though Byrd’s citizenship labeling was debated.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Clardy of San Antonio Texas reported Tuesday that their grandson Richard age four underwent surgery Monday and is recovering nicely.
Santa Fe photographer Patt Meara of the New Mexican was ordered out of the Federal courthouse by Judge Hatch after he kept a camera outside the courtroom door. He said he planned to shoot photos after adjournment as State Police Chief Beasley and three others pleaded innocent to torture charges in the murder case.
Parrell Thomas denied parole from federal Danbury prison where he serves six to eighteen months for the HAAC misconduct. The parole board in Washington offered no reason yet noted no plan to pay the $10,000 fine imposed.
The American Legion plans a club room for meetings and entertainment. Commander Clyde Harris appointed a committee to explore options. The August meeting will hear reports from three Lovington boys who attended Boys State at Eastern New Mexico University in June.
Lovington volunteers rushed to a Wednesday morning blaze in the northeast area. A shed on John Dean’s property burned down, causing extensive damage to the house before fire crews arrived. The fire occurred between two and two thirty and its cause is not known.
District Judge Luis E. Armijo will hear two racing commission cases in Carrizozo on July 27. He follows Judge W. T. Scoggin Jr. who was disqualified. The State Attorney General seeks to set aside temporary injunctions. One case bars the commission and Hollywood Park at Ruidoso from interfering with Lester Davis attendance at weekend races. The other seeks to extend racing dates.
San Francisco reports a rank and file revolt against Harry Bridges over support for United Nations Korea intervention. Major locals pledged ship loading crews for Korea and all but one backed UN action, following a boycott ordered by Bridges' World Maritime Federation.
Agriculture Secretary Charles Brannan told the House Agriculture Committee there is no excuse for higher grocery prices or hoarding and urged quick action. He sought authority to distribute government stockpiles of surplus food that might spoil, proposing a 50 million dollar bill to cover shipping of perishables to central state distribution points.
Funeral services were held Monday for Mrs Zora Alma McMillan age 91 of Hobbs who died July 23 in a Hobbs hospital. Born April 28 1859 in Georgia she and her husband William A McMillan moved from Georgetown Texas to Lea County about 40 years ago and settled seven miles west of Hobbs. Survivors include three daughters seven grandchildren nine great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Casket bearers were Damon Shipp Spencer Graham Warren Snyder Virgil Linam and Bob Porter.
Mrs. Gladys Vaughn departs for Roswell to attend a U.S. Commerce School then begins a mortgage survey of Lea and Eddy Counties for a week reporters note.
The Air Force says it is recalling a very limited number of Air Reserve Units to active duty. The move reflects defense posture adjustments announced in Washington.
Civil docket lists multiple divorce petitions including William P Powers versus Edith Powers with custody and property division terms. Dorothy Lewallen seeks divorce with temporary restraining order, custody of a minor and support. fees set at 75 dollars monthly and 100 for attorney. Also noted are actions for quiet title by Acres Inc. against heirs of Rufus Perry and a compensation claim for a laborer burned on the job with disability noted.
Twelve battle-wounded American GIs arrived at Fairfield-Suisun Air Force Base en route to U.S. military hospitals. Corporal Albert Viera of Oakland, speaking for the group, said North Korean troops were improving rapidly in tactics after observing July 4th fighting.
North Korean guerrillas have slipped behind American lines within miles of Pusan, the main Korean supply port for U.N. forces. Officials say guerrilla bands are spotted in northeast near Pusan and in about five additional locations. No guerrilla successes have been confirmed yet, but officials warn it could develop. Meanwhile Fifth Air Force units assault south coast river ports aided by rocket-armed jets. Red troops advanced eastward toward Hadong, near 75 miles from Pusan, before a surprise American counterattack recaptured Hadong with a fire set to it.
Governor Thomas J. Mabry pledges welfare help for drouth stricken farmers in Chilili after residents sought work relief water and food for people and stock. Welfare director Murray Hintz reports similar needs in Mountainair though a request for immediate work on State Highway 10 appears not granted as plans proceed.
Mr and Mrs Alec Fambrough left Sunday night for San Diego California after word that Mr Fambrough s father had passed away No details of the funeral arrangements are known at this time
Lea County 4 H Encampment in the Sacramento Mountains Southwest of Weed drew eighty members aged 10 to 21 with County Agent T C Perkins. Activities included hiking archery riflery softball volleyball folk dancing and a Kangaroo Court on the 21st presided by camp officers Jim Black Joel Black and Filmore Bilbrey. Lloyd Cockeril from State College led recreation and Earl Karnegay of Hobbs oversaw transportation as the group traveled in three buses.
The John Han cock Mutual Life Insurance Company will cap new policies for armed forces members at 10000 dollars and reject certain special types of coverage. Vice-President Ross Moyer cites preventing a flood of low-cost term policies from military personnel that would raise costs for others. The limit takes effect Thursday.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Edwin L. Mechem blasts state police policies saying actions depend on the state chief executive. He urges reorganizing the force, boosting funding, and providing modern crime detection tools as police search three escapees and investigate a murder and other crimes.
Dr Harold I Woolard of Eastern New Mexico University led services at the Lovington Methodist Church in Reverend W R Houston’s absence. Houston has returned from vacation and will conduct services next week.
President Truman presents a mid year economic report calling for industry labor and consumer cooperation to avoid wartime inflation. He argues no direct price wage or production controls are needed if all parties cooperate and cites a five billion dollar tax boost as starter.
County Agent T. C. Perkins announced that Lloyd Cockeril of State College will assume duties as Assistant County Agent of Lea County beginning September 1.
Lea County draft clerk Frances Connell says 39 youths were mailed induction notices for August 8 in Levin. Delinquents face FBI action. Named Hobbs residents include Humphreys Bartlett Thompson Streetman Whitaker Wommach Reaves Lewis and others. McCollough Tannehill cadets at NM Institute, Owens at Naval Academy. 23 others also notified, with Hobbs, Eunice, Lovington, Jal, Tatum, Oil Center representations.
A 21 year old Herman Montano was killed in a head on crash with an American Bus Lines transport 22 miles east of Lordsburg. He had just left the Army four days earlier after discharge from Fort Bliss. A separate accident near Chama killed two 12 year old girls Dolores Martinez and Dolores Garcia when their truck overturned after a picnic outing. The state total of violent deaths in four days reached nine.
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz told Seattle that UN forces must push beyond the 38th parallel into North Korea to settle the crisis. He warned of a long, difficult battle against veteran Korean troops and said China must be recognized to gain influence, contrasting with Russian aims.
Prisoner Joe Rogers receives a three year sentence for taking a handgun from Lubbock Texas to Clovis for his wife’s protection. Jailer Fred Martinez faces federal negligence charges after Rogers walked out of the Santa Fe City jail and was later captured at his wife’s apartment in Clovis.
