Rotarians welcomed Troop 44 scouts and families at the luncheon. Scouts briefed on Valley Forge Jamboree activities and visits to Washington D C Niagara Falls and Canada. Rotary members presented pen and pencil sets. Also reported is J E Kirby in critical condition after a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Lovington.

Supt H C Pannell of the Lovington Municipal Schools says rooms and apartments will be needed for all new teachers arriving next month. Landlords should provide a list of available housing as several teachers have families and require houses or larger units.
Evelyn Onita Sellers a Monument high school sophomore lies in Brown Sanatorium Brownwood Texas during a long rest period due to rheumatic fever. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs W R Sellers and enjoys collecting poems. She would welcome poem copies to help pass the time.
Forrest Lee Paroled Forrest K Lee, sentenced in November 1949 to one to two years in the state pen for issuing worthless checks, has been given a conditional release by Governor Mabry on the pardon board's recommendation.
Vandals broke into the Loving ton Boy Scout Hut in the eastern part of town last week. The group had recently repainted the hut and paint was smeared over walls and floors. Eighty cents in dues was stolen.
John Catchings reports heavy sheep losses on the Catchings and Coleman ranches near Humble City. Hobbs GPA members patrol nightly to deter marauding dogs and wildcats, with more than one hundred sheep killed and carcasses scattered across the ranch.
The July Term of District Court convenes July 17 with Judge Roy C. Anderson on the bench in Lovington. The docket has not been set. August generally has no court and officials expect the same policy this year.
W M Beauchamp district court clerk learned Saturday July 8 his new car would not run without gasoline. He started to Hobbs with Mrs Beauchamp and grandchildren and ran out of fuel just before reaching Humble City.
The Leader misprint claimed Dave Erwin would build a 75000 dollar house. The error passed galley and page proofs before press, and no correction source is identified. The story itself states the amount as 7500 dollars, with the real figure of seven five thousand implied by the text. Dave’s final costs will likely reflect the larger figure.
Mrs. Mary Reaves III is reported to be ill at her home this week. Dear friends and neighbors are wished well and a quick recovery is hoped for the community figure.
United Press reports Americans retreating from Taejon as Communist pressure mounts from the north and west. Washington officials insist there is time to stabilize defenses and possibly save Taejon, with frontline dispatches noting main forces pulled back while defense lines are reinforced.
The State College Extension Service issues a second warning on cotton pests naming the cowpea aphid as most damaging and noting it is seldom present in treated fields. The black cotton fleahopper is also appearing in large numbers while earlier warnings warned of greater harm this season than in past years.
Mrs. Mary Russell Bradbury age 21 earned her high school diploma in Louisville during commencement after interrupting studies for five years due to marriage and two babies. Her three year old son attended with his father and grandmother while 18 month old Dorinda stayed with a babysitter. Bradbury quit at junior year end at 16 to wed James Donald Bradbury a registered pharmacist.
Stan Zbyszko, once a top flight American wrestler in early 20th century, now lives in rural Maine and works as a chicken farmer.
Far from the fighting scene, new peace moves are reported. In dia discloses that her ambassa dors were instructed two days ago to deliver personal messages from Prime Minister Nehru to Premier Stalin and President Truman. The messages called for a speedy and peaceful settlement of the Korean dispute. Britain has delivered two peace requests to Moscow. Russia’s apparent willingness to talk about peace with Britain raises hopes in diplomatic circles in Moscow. Foreign observers believe Russia favors peace but is constrained by not recognizing the UN Security Council decision. Secretary of State Dean Acheson is closely watching these feelers and has no comment at present.
Lea and Eddy counties farmers monitor a New Mexico irrigation water case. The state seeks decrees to restrain underground water use on lands without rights and to require permits for drilling wells. Defendants Hemler and Allen irrigate about 160 acres each and deny unlawful use. petitions were filed April 13 in Carlsbad.
The Tatum softball team forfeited games in the first half and cannot field enough players, ending their Lovington League participation. August 21 marks the start of playoffs after a July 20 to August 21 schedule release.
Artesia resident J. H. Frazier 54 died in his Lovington room at an apartment house on Mains Street owned by Sam Clardy. He was found by Marvin Galloway on Wednesday morning, an inquest ruled death from natural causes, time of death listed as midnight. Frazier worked for Wyley Construction Co and will be buried in Artesia. Survived by wife and children in Artesia and a brother, Walter Frazier of Hobbs.
On July 10 in Lovington the County Clerk received a real estate attachment in District Court case No 8744 Boles Orphan Homes v J Paul Heard former Hobbs Mayor now in Lubbock. The property on lots 13 14 15 15 block 8 original Hobbs lies across from Furr Food Stores near the Flagg Inn Camp. Suit seeks eight months rent totaling $1000.
General Douglas MacArthur received the United Nations flag symbolizing his role in the Korean War. He described the flag as representing one of mankind's greatest efforts toward freedom and sent a message to UN Secretary-General Trygve Lie predicting victory in Korea.

David Byars of Hobbs and Wayne Watkins of Tatum will join 82 candidates at New Mexico A M College summer commencement to receive civil engineering degrees. Byars is the son of Mr and Mrs J C Byars of Hobbs and Watkins is the son of Mr and Mrs Gene Watkins of Tatum.
SANTA FE New Mexico UP The State Game and Fish Department says its predator control division killed 535 predatory animals during June. The total includes three lions 96 coyotes 42 bobcats 18 foxes 82 skunks and several lesser predators.
