Funeral services were held for Mr James B Purifoy and Mrs Mary Ellen Caldwell Purifoy in Lovington New Mexico with rites at Smith Yarbro Funeral Home. Mary Ellen died January 15 in Barstow California and James B died January 18 from injuries. Interment followed at Lovington Cemetery.

Senate Debates 37 Quickie Permits Probe
The State Senate debated liquor licensing practices over last minute issuance of 37 licenses by former liquor Czar Tom Montoya. Revenue Commissioner Corlett hinted at possible irregularities and the department began an investigation with five licenses ordered to show cause why they should not be cancelled. Attorney General Martinez offered office facilities. Governor Mechem was unable to attend. The House delayed a gasoline tax cut while sending the Canadian River Compact Bill to the Senate.

Lovington Students Earn All State Band Berths
Three Lovington students Brookie Lee Anderson, David Hester, and Berton Niccum earned spots at the All State Band clinic held in Roswell January 18 to 20 under director James Robertson of the University of Wichita. They played bari tone saxophone, clarinet, and bass clarinet respectively as tryouts and practice led to a final concert on Friday January 19 with Mrs. W. A. Anderson accompanying the group.

Lear County rancher Skelt Williams died January 20 at his Lovington home after a six month illness. Funeral services were held January 22 at 3 p.m. at Smith-Yarbro Chapel with Rev. Aubrey Short officiating. Williams, known as the Cowboys' Philosopher, was 50.
