Velma Finn of Hobbs will not face trial on manslaughter charges over the death of nine year old James Vinson Terry on the Denver City highway. Assistant district attorney Max Edwards, who left office at year end, said no information was filed and the case was not brought to the district court docket.
Construction of a 21 million dollar electric plant by Southwest Electric Co. seven miles west of Hobbs is expected to begin within 30 days. J C Bohannan reports from the Pritchard Co. in Kansas City that plans will be ironed out in about a month and an important announcement will follow. Hobbs will oversee union carpenters on the project.
Divorces filed include Imadell Virginia Dodson against Olan Harvey Dodson Willie Evans Beard against Delores Beard and Reba Joy McGill against Arthur George McGill.
Lea County Sheriff Charlie Trimble gains more elbow room as the sheriff’s office takes over the former County Superintendent of Schools quarters. Lovington City Police move from basement to occupy the old sheriff’s office on the first floor. Eva Tatuma’s staff gains storage space as the probate judge’s office moves downstairs, with all changes approved by the county commissioners.
After the 1931 groundwater law Lea County Basin was administered by the State Engineer. By 1948 about 120000 acres of permit land existed but further appropriations were halted to protect existing rights. In 1952 the basin extended west to include deep underground water, which remains open to new rights. Recharge is limited, and pumping from storage is needed as rainfall cannot sustain perpetual rights. The State Engineer now considers modifying the 1948 closure order amid investigations by USGS and hydrogeologists.
The New Mexico Education Association executive committee forms a two year special panel on school finances. Lovington schools superintendent H C Pannell joins as member alongside superintendents from Las Vegas Taos Alamogordo Mora Albuquerque Carlsbad Tucumcari Las Cruces Deming Gallup Springer Santa Fe and advisor J E Owens tax agent for the Santa Fe railroad.
Associate area rent director Charles L. O Neal said he will be in Lovington on Wednesday January 7 at the Town Hall Building. He was at the Hobbs Branch Office at 608 North Turner Street today.
Mrs. Joella Robinson to be first deputy in the treasurer’s office in charge of cash ledgers. Mrs. Terry Crow named second deputy over tax cash. Eula Wamser to oversee tax roll for district 1. Agnes Huston district 8. Billie Moran district 16. Sue Lawlis districts 19 and 28 with oil and gas production roll. Barbara Lee Owens announced deputies Thursday at Court House oath of office.
A J Lowe of Borger Texas assumes duties as assistant village marshal of Tatum replacing E W Long who joined the Lovington Police force C B Loper is the Marshall and Judge Wyckoff serves as village judge
Mrs. Juanita Bush of Albuquerque is employed as a school nurse in the local system and will begin duties within two weeks. She has worked for the New Mexico Department of Public Health for the past several months.
Roy Tatum county assessor and deputies started district visits in Lea county to collect renditions of real and personal property for taxation and exemptions. The schedule covers Crossroads Pitchfork Caprock Gladiola Tatum McDonald Prairieview Eunice Jal Hobbs with a March 1 deadline and a 5 percent penalty for non renditions.
The underground water basin dispute widens as partial re-opening by State Engineer John Bliss prompts lawsuits challenging authority. About 16 townships left closed. 12 wells granted to Southwestern Power Co with choice of drilled sections. A $21 million plant is planned seven miles from Hobbs along the Carlsbad highway to supply power to Hobbs Lovington Eddy County and perhaps Chaves County. State lands leased to John R Joyce Jr W M Snyder and R D Lee Jr. Attorneys for local ranchers contest the move.
Judge Mildred Long is nicknamed the marrying judge of Lea County after 1952 as Probate Judge. She married 924 couples while office open in the courthouse across from the County Clerk’s, mostly from Texas who sought quick nuptials.
The Village of Tatum issued a December 23 contract for a 100000 gallon water tank to Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. The bid amount was withheld by Village Clerk Bina Mae Hall on instructions from May Holt. Construction starts four to five months after steel arrival. A January 6 award for a test well is planned and a drilling permit application is filed.
Assistant District Attorney Joe Walton was sworn in at 9 a.m. and by ten had his first inquiry from a Texas attorney seeking help to free a Mexican jailed inmate. Walton redirected the matter to Sheriff Charlie Trimble. Outgoing A D A Max Edwards said he received a late night call at 2 a.m. on the second and referred it to Walton with pleasure.
Dr Marion Hotopp director of Maternal and Child Health Bureau and Miss Dorothy Hacker state nutrition consultant visit Lea County this week to aid infant and preschool clinics. They planned stops in Tatum Lovington Hobbs Eunice and Jal following their county tour.
William Arthur Hawthorne ran off the road at 9 25 p m and completely demolished his 1951 Plymouth. He received only a scratch on his head. Punk Burns transported the man to a local doctor for treatment.
