Former Hobbs police officer William Privitts bound over to district court on charges of murder after a two part preliminary hearing. Willie Carter, a Hobbs Black man, was killed during a crap game at the Cocoanut Grove in the colored district. Eyewitnesses testified Privitts shouted orders and fired one shot as the game participants scattered, with Bateman and others detailing the events and surrounding chaos.

Beauchamp and Reese Injured in Cloudcroft Crash
District Clerk W. M. Beauchamp and Assistant Mrs. Buster Reese were injured Thursday when Beauchamp’s car rolled over after driving on a soft shoulder to pass a truck near Cloudcroft. They were taken to Alamogordo Hospital with leg fractures. the truck driver aided their rescue before the vehicle burned. Relatives from Lovington rushed to Alamogordo after news of the crash.
