George Critchet died at the local hospital from injuries after his car was ground under a switching Santa Fe train at Gold Avenue crossing. He is the fourth fatality in the accident, following the Valland Ingham sisters and their father E R Valland Ingham, editor of the Deming Headlight, who was injured. Mr and Mrs G C Critchet and Cecil Critchet were at his bedside.
Leonard Atkins, head of the Silver City Elks band and bookkeeper in Fort Bayard purchasing, was killed when the car he drove with Sergeant Craig left the Fort Bayard Silver City road and plunged into a deep arroyo about a mile from Central.
The three daughters of R Vallandingham killed in a Deming automobile accident are buried in a single large grave. Practically the town's population accompanied the bodies to the gravesite for the simple ceremony.
Santa Fé records the coldest night of the winter as the thermometer sinks to two degrees below zero on January 31, signaling a sharp drop in temperatures for the region.

Germany and Austria-Hungary announce from March 1 they will treat armed merchant ships as warships and attack them without warning. The United States warns citizens traveling on such vessels risk government nonprotection. The move follows Secretary Lansing’s note proposing new sea warfare rules.
