John Herron, 38, drove through an eight hour blizzard near Glenrio New Mexico to reach help after his bus carrying 15 passengers became stranded in a four foot drift. He reached a filling station barely conscious and guided rescuers to the immobilized vehicle. All passengers were found safe early Sunday morning.
Frederick Huidekoper and his wife spent a night in Cortina jail after mixing up Olympic tickets. They were charged with aggravated outrage but the count dropped to being in the wrong section. They were released provisionally. the consul guaranteed the fine. Judge Gioanni Piazza said he was embarrassed by the incident.
Two murder trials highlight a brief jury term presided by District Judge John R. Brand. Louise Gipson of Hobbs faces murder charges in Naomi Robinson's death. Ray Wilson Young of Hobbs faces trial for the fatal stabbing of Ray Anderson Smith. The only other trial is Robert A. Coleman for auto theft with consent.
Hobbs police investigate a Sunday night break-in at First Baptist Church 300 E. Cain. Entry method unknown as outer doors were left open. a door was removed to reach the office and several other doors pried. About $25 in cash and an Argus C-3 camera owned by Jimmie Ward were stolen. Smudged fingerprints were found but not usable.
Herman Williams, 22, of Hobbs, pleaded guilty to grand larceny before Justice Bob Bensing and was bound over to district court on a $1,000 bond. He allegedly stole a 32.20 caliber public safety item from Howard Rice’s Hobbs home on January 28 and pawned it in Odessa for $20.
The following young men have entered the Armed Forces from Lea County Franklin Garner Peterson Lovington Army and William Boyd Lovington Marine Corps both listed in the local notice marking military induction from Lovington.
Lexington Nebraska attorney John Neff admitted to sending $2,500 to Senator Francis Case of South Dakota. He said the gift had no strings but refused to say if it related to the Harris Bill or natural gas prices. Neff offered to testify to the FBI or answer Senate questions.
In Lovington Mrs. E. H. Byers notes the help of her two sons in law during a heavy snow. Ray Short trudged to medicine while Tack Hale battled drifts to deliver four days of mail. Both were offered pie and hot coffee.
A 25-year-old Clovis man, James Oren Humes, died in a Santa Rosa hospital after a fast car on US 54 66 failed to make a curve and rolled over four times. Driver Teddy Hamlett, 17, was injured. Police say excessive speed caused the crash. The weekend toll included two other fatal wrecks near Espanola and Santa Rosa.
Al Savisky of Lea County announces his bid for the state House in the second district citing prior campaign success on the city commission. He notes a later formal announcement, is married with three children, and his wife Ida Pope comes from Lea County pioneer families.
Rev C G Watt president of the Civic Loyalty League for Lea County disputs a Leader report about Harold Gress. He claims 100 to 150 people attended the May 5 First Baptist Church Lovington hiring, says the contract lasted only through the dry campaign, and notes Gress carried a gun permit observed in Clovis. He cites the grand jury meeting and asserts Gress worked under the Clovis Police Chief at all times.
The Lovington and Lea County mop up is continuing after a freeze snarl. City crews aided stalled motorists on Sunday while county and state crews assisted roads from Lovington to Tatum and up to the D A Jones Ranch. Jerry Clayton and a ranch hand were reported missing from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. after their pickup stalled. they built a fire in a vacant barn and were rescued. City workers cleared snow in the business district on Monday.
French Premier Guy Mollet arrived in Algiers to a mob of thousands of French settlers protesting equal rights for Muslims and Europeans. Police and troops formed a barricade as rioters vandalized the wreath at the Unknown Soldier and stormed palace gardens. General Georges Catroux resigned as the crisis escalated during 15 months of nationalist rebellion.
Lovington youth Bill Lee was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps after earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of New Mexico presented January 28. He reported to basic school at Quantico February 2, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Lee of Lovington. He is Lovington High School class of 1951 valedictorian and student body president.
R B Cosby 37 of 421 W Dunham Hobbs was arrested and confined in the city jail on Thursday on a warrant charging vagrancy and failure to work and provide support for his children. The warrant was issued by Justice of the Peace Robert Bensing.
The entertainment world mourns two veteran performers Bob Burns and Charlie Grapewin. Burns died in a Hollywood hospital of cancer at age 64, famed for his home spun bazooka humor. Grapewin, 86, had a 70 year stage career and was known for Jeeter Lester in Tobacco Board and Grandpa Joad in The Grapes of Wrath.
A Lovington Hobbs group urged Lea County to enlarge the courthouse citing rising civil and criminal cases and the need for two resident judges. Judge John R. Brand urged hiring an architect and planning 25 year needs, with space for a larger law library and better air conditioning. Local officials and bankers backed expansion and a survey urged broad input from all offices.
Jeanette H. Domenic 24 of Houston Texas narrowly escaped death when her car overturned after skidding on icy roads near Hobbs. State Patrolman Hoover Wimbrely said the 1955 Ford traveled 180 feet off the road then 320 feet sideways before overturning one and a half times. Domenic was cited for reckless driving.
Sunday February 5 issue corrects a civil matter misclassified as a divorce. The suit is Jimmie Gilbert versus Lloyd Gilbert and is properly a child support action.
Dr. Floyd Golden of Eastern New Mexico University will launch the Conquistador Council Membership Campaign at 6 30 p m February 7 at the Nickson Hotel Roswell. Rudolph Sparks organized the Together Plan to boost Cub Packs Scout Troops and Explorer Units across districts with district chairmen and commissioners forming organizing teams.
The week highlights General Motors earnings surpassing a billion dollars for the first time, with 1956 forecasts near 1955 levels. GM led output, Chrysler cut Detroit to four days, Packard paused, and overall auto production rose from the prior week. January totals show declines versus 1955. Consumer debts rose by 648 million dollars in December.
The week showed gains across autos construction and energy with civil engineering awards up over 90 percent from a year ago. Oil output stayed above last year while steel and electricity remained strong. Ford shed a dollar from the offering price but paid a 60 cent dividend. Santa Fe announced a five for one stock split boosting market optimism.
