Judge Defers Sentence In U S Booker Case
Judge George T. Harris presided at the Lea County Criminal Court session Friday excusing the jury to February 13 for civil cases. Several defendants were sentenced or had pleas entered including Roy Davenport alias Tommy Dalton bond forfeiture ordered. Fred Smith given 15 to 25 years for second degree murder. John P. Stark pleads guilty to worthless checks with 2 to 3 years. Clyde Wilson arraigned under habitual criminal act with sentences to run concurrently. Harvey Wise pleads guilty to grand larceny and burglary with 3 to 5 and 2 to 4 years concurrently. U S Booker pleads guilty to bribery with sentence postponed until Heard's trial. J D Kendrick pleads guilty to two counts of larceny with suspended sentences under conditions. Jack Buchanan and Jack Johnson also sentenced with suspended terms or minor jail time as conditions. The term adjourns to February 13 for civil cases.

North Lea County raised 1515 dollars under Mrs. Dessie Sawyer. A January 28 dance at the American Legion Hall added 745 dollars. McDonald Tatum and Lovington contributed strong, with Tatum Methodist Church giving a Sunday collection. Dimes were given as corsages and dress adornments for the drive.

Hobbs Man Held on Murder Charge After Cafe Shooting
Jesse Satchel Bailey, 35, a Hobbs resident, is jailed in Lea County on a first degree murder charge after the fatal shooting of Hobbs mechanic Buglar, 33, at the Cozy Inn Cafe. Bailey, held without bond, has a preliminary hearing set for February 15 in Hobbs before Justice of the Peace Tom Finn.

Bubonic plague patient improves at Albuquerque VA Hospital
Jack W. Alexander, 27, an oil field worker from Mallamar, moved off the critical list at the Albuquerque Veterans Administration Hospital after antibiotic treatment cut death risk. He became the second plague patient treated here in six months, with Raldon Gutierrez of Placitos, New Mexico, the first case in the period, now also out of danger.

New Houses Begin in Gore Addition Development
Materials arrived for a ten unit housing project in the Gore Addition on the west side of the Hobbs highway. Weldon Cox of Lovington Real Estate is the agent and Lawrence Rice of Hamilton Texas is the contractor. The first ten four room houses with garages will have paved streets and full curb and gutter. Financing will be through GI Loans and FHA. The Hamilton family plans to move to Lovington.

The American Legion sponsors the third annual New Mexico Boys State at Eastern New Mexico University Portales from June 4 to 11. Hobbs Chamber of Commerce members heard that taxpayers will cover any operating deficit for the new county hospital. Paul Cushing described the million dollar facility as a mutual community responsibility with high standards for staff and equipment. Opening is projected for April, with a mission to hire only qualified nurses and technicians and safeguards for the $15,000 X ray machine. officials expect the hospital to run in the red the first years, funded by law through county taxes, possibly a one mill levy costing about one dollar per thousand assessed value in Lea County.
