Radio operator Les Villars reports the railroad is holding a box sent to Faye Smith from Chicago at the Lea County Jail in Lovington. Smith has not arrived at the jail and railroad workers conduct daily checks to attempt delivery.
District Clerk reports 83 civil cases docketed in January. Deputy clerk notes 90 non jury cases awaiting hearing date.
Lea County ASC Committee may establish a cotton acreage allotment for a new farm if an application is filed by February 12, 1954, the operator is largely dependent on farm income, and the farm is the only one owned and operated by the operator with a 1954 allotment.
He urged placing one billion dollars of surplus farm goods into the foreign policy pot to cut government stockpiles and aid foreign policy goals. The plan aims to use surplus commodities to advance administration objectives abroad.
In Lovington the 1954 March of Dimes drive collected more than 10 000 dollars, led by Jim and Dick Laughlin. The event drew Rotarians and Kiwanis supporters and crowned Cliff Yearwood Ugly Man winner with 1832.37 dollars in cash donations. Gordon McMeen placed third with 1489.94 dollars.

Assistant District Attorney C C McCulloh and District Judge R F Deacon Arnedge also seek the post. Seymour has not yet stated re election plans.
District 4-H leaders training sessions will be held in Roswell Deming Albuquerque and Las Vegas from January 29 to March 6. L S Kurtz state 4H club leader at New Mexico A and M College announced the meetings will cover record keeping demonstrations recreation parent interest and IFYE delegate reports. County groups from multiple counties will attend each session with dates and locations listed for Roswell Deming Albuquerque and Las Vegas. Adults or youths in 4-H leadership or seeking to become leaders are invited.
The House Ways and Means Committee approved a measure to provide a special tax reduction up to 600 dollars per year for widows widowers and legally separated persons with one or more children under 10 who work to cover child care costs such as babysitters.
A district court motion seeks to vacate the judgment and sentence of Bobby Doyle, dismiss the murder conviction, withdraw his guilty plea, and transfer the case to the juvenile docket. The 15 year old defendant is alleged to have killed his stepmother and infant half sister, with claims the plea was not voluntary and his age and mental state negate second degree murder. The petition asks placement at Springer Industrial Home for Boys until age 21. Judge Armijo may rule within 30 days. Bobby remains jailed in Lea County.

James Richard Lister was born January 28 1954 at the home of Mr and Mrs Jim Lister in Norman Oklahoma. Paternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Jake Lister of Loving Buckeye. Jimmy Lister is a student at the University.
A Hobbs woman Virginia Davison aged 65 dies in a head on crash near Seminole Oklahoma. Her husband Thomas Davison and a Seminole driver Joseph Durham Hale are identified as involved. In Lovington, county officials win immediate entry to condemn land for a proposed Lea County airport after R A Hilburn balked at consent. Damages set at 6750 dollars with bond posted for 13500 dollars.
Town clerk announces yearly dog tag supply and mandates vaccination against rabies before tag issuance. Town manager says untagged stray dogs will be picked up starting next Monday February 8 and held 48 hours after pickup.
Lovington New Mexico mayor proclaims February 1954 as Safety Education Month. The proclamation cites highway deaths in the state and urges cooperation with municipal government police department and public schools to promote a safety education program sponsored by the American Legion in Lovington.
Henry Carter of Hobbs appeals his six month Lea County jail term and $500 fine for selling alcohol without a license. He posted a $2,500 bond and was released. he was treated at Lea County Hospital on Thursday.
State police announce road blocks to catch sticker violators. Drivers will receive tickets instead of warnings, reflecting a stricter enforcement approach.
Eighth fatality in under a year occurs on a curve near Paul's Bar east of Lovington on the Denver City Highway. Elvin Littrell of Borger Texas dies instantly in a Nash Wagon crash with F T Berry of Plains Texas. Berry dies later in Hobbs County Hospital after a coroners inquest at the crash site. State Patrol reports Littrell was intoxicated according to a service station attendant.
Reported death follows a late year automobile crash. Autopsy and Austin laboratory tests show acute alcoholism as the cause. Witnesses say the driver had a pint shortly before the wreck and a single minor hand scratch noted.
Police blotter reports multiple wrecks last week. John Curtis said a Green Chevrolet hit him about 6:45 on Sunday and fled. A sleep driver ran off the Artesia Highway on the 28th, minor injuries. Turner of Turv Changeal involved in a noninjury accident near Lovington. Billy James near Lovington wrecked his car with no injuries. Donald Ray collided with Henry Lee near Smith Machinery on South Main with no serious damage.

Etcheverny 22 son of Mr and Mrs Pello Etcheverny Lovington New Mexico was recently promoted to corporal while serving in Korea with IX Corps The unit coordinates post trace training and reconditioning of TIN units under its control Etcheverny a communications chief with the 86th Field Artillery Battalion entered the Army in September 1952.
