Weather did little to deter work on major drainage and street improvements around Lovington New Mexico. Crews removed sand from a big well north of town and filled centers with dirt, creating slopes to channel water into ditches. Community urged to continue post three days to enhance looks and accessibility of streets and sidewalks.
A local resident explains moving a house from King to Lovington to open a skating rink for girls. He notes sunk costs of about 100 dollars and plans to offer free skating part of the time with charges later to cover expenses. The letter signs off as CW Townsend.
A local report notes Lovington will be represented at the Grand Encampment in the large gathering of the Woodmen of the World. The camp has strong membership and a well-run meeting. Judge J D Cunninghurty opens a land office in Semingle Gaines Co Texas and will practice in Texas and U.S. courts.
R D Yoakum of St Louis plans a large pumping plant in Portales Valley to irrigate up to a thousand acres. The system uses a fifty horsepower engine delivering 2 950 gallons per minute, supplying one acre foot of water at about seventy five cents from a 50 foot well. Yoakum has prepared land for irrigation with several fields plowed to ten to fifteen inches, aiming to place a thousand acres under cultivation.
A New York note describes a simple debt scene where individuals with initials owe sums ranging from five to thirty dollars. A person with a five dollar bill hands it to another, noting it covers five dollars of a fifteen dollar debt, while all involved sit together at the same table.
A chain of debt payments using a single five dollar note settles multiple balances and reduces several debts. The note circulates from B to C to D to E to F to A then back to B, with partial payments and cancellations totaling eighty two dollars and fifty cents.
