Ellenburger Wells Continue Drilling in Lea County Tests

In southeast Lea County several new tests are planned or completed by Maxwell, Skelly Oil, Devonian and Ellenburger targets. Wells include No. 1-H L. E. Elliott Federal, No. 1-AW State NCT-2, No. 1 D Hill, No. 1-L Mexico State and No. 1-K Mexico with varied depths and production potentials.

December Jury Term Opens With Rape Embezzlement Cases

The December jury term of District opens at 9 am December 17. First case Arthur Renton of Hobbs, a 23 year old Navy veteran, faces rape charges. Second case Thomas Chavez from Jal Port of Entry faces embezzlement allegations after missing funds were reported. Chavez denies wrongdoing.

Fred A. Pierce and James A. Schofield face joint trial on grand larceny charges. Dennis Dunap to be tried for involuntary manslaughter in the death of Helen Aline Dye of Lovington. Hubert Rogers will be tried for DWI, followed by Howard Stibens in an attempted robbery case. Albert Mitchel suspects in a Hobbs furniture theft. Robert D. Parker to be tried in Lea County for involuntary manslaughter of a bicycle rider. Cecil Thompson faces illegal license use. Al Stryhn and Jewell Hoover charged with selling liquor to minors with Stryhn ill health delaying proceedings.

Eunice Liquor License Move Sought to Pitchfork Site

J E Box, owner of a Eunice package store, asks to transfer liquor licenses to his Property along Pitchfork Bledsoe Road. Commissioners took no action. Pitchfork residents recently lost a state liquor board bid to bar a bar operated by Jack Hitson in the area.

Lovington National Calls Meeting of Stockholders

Lovington National Bank stock holders are notified of the annual meeting at the bank office on Tuesday January 8 at 3 p.m. Directors will be elected and other business transacted. Stockholders were mailed proxy forms if unable to attend.

Four Lea County residents were elected to the executive committee of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association. Jack Danglade of Lovington joins Dantzel D. Bodie J. N. Dunlavey and R. L. State Patrolman Otis Hailey arrested Willie Andrews, a Lovington Negro, Monday morning on charges of being drunk and resisting arrest.

Musical Show And Dance To Be Held Tonight In Hobbs

The Hobbs high school auditorium hosts the Grand Ole Opera with radio personalities and stars Lefty Frizzell Wayne Raney Red Garrett and the Tennessee Pioneers performing on stage at 7:00 p.m. The Legion Hall will host dancing starting at 9:00 p.m. after the show.

Campbell Expands Ranchers Supply After January First

John Campbell, owner of Rancher's Supply, plans to add a new department to his farm business. He will build and install machinery to grind and mix his own feed after the first of the year. He is reviewing designs and pictures of feed grinding and mixing equipment. Campbell runs a one stop farm store offering feeding seeds chemicals implements and machinery plus Lea County's only grain elevator.

Kerr to Speak at New Mexico Democratic Dinner

Senator Robert S. Kerr of Oklahoma will address the Jefferson Jackson Day dinner in Albuquerque on December 19 at the Ice Arcana. The lifelong Democrat and former Oklahoma governor is known as a sharp, seasoned political figure and has keynote experience at the 1944 Democratic National Convention. Tickets at 25 dollars per plate indicate strong interest and expected full capacity.

McMeen Joins Lovington Auto Co as Assistant Manager

Mr and Mrs Gordon McMeen and their baby visited Lovington last week. They previously lived here before his Army induction. He worked at Lovington National Bank and has returned from Korea to take duties as assistant manager of Lovington Auto Co. The couple will make their home in Lovington after a brief Albuquerque trip.

Wildcats Start Hoops Season With Win Over Coyotes

Lovington defeats Tatum 45 to 34 as John Anderson scores 16 and L E Bullington adds 14 through strong set plays. Wildcats controlled boards and lead most of the game, with Tatum briefly ahead in the third period before Lovington pulled away. Carol Bailey led Tatum with 13.

Final Rites Today For Gene Allison

Eugene M. Allison 33 chairman of the State Corporation Commission died from injuries after his car struck ice on U S 285 and plunged over a bank near Lamy. He was en route to Roswell after meetings on rate increases sought by Montana States and Southwestern Associated Telephone Companies. Funeral services were held Monday in Roswell at 2 PM.

Three Cunninghams Arrested for Oil Theft at Tatum

Robert Clyde and James Cunningham were charged with stealing a 55 barrel Continental oil valued over 20 dollars from Rig No 9 on George P Livermore lease near Tatum and were arraigned in Justice Court with bonds set at 500 dollars each.

E M Kenny of the Conservation Service visited Loving ton to discuss consolidating the Soil Conservation Service PMA and FHA in a single housing program. James Robinson noted the meeting would start once enough members arrived and D A Hudgens planned a fireproof building on the square to house Hudgens and Hudgens real estate with a side entrance to government offices.

Underground water law discussed at Hobbs Chamber lunch

State Engineer John H. Bliss outlined 1927 and 1931 underground water laws and basin restrictions affecting Lea County. He noted no new permits since basin closure except for domestic stock use and oil test needs. Industry must buy existing permits to obtain water, while municipalities share equal rights.
