The Agriculture Department estimates the 1954 cotton crop at 12,168,000 bales, down 23 percent from 1953. Strong production controls and drought impact drive the drop, with total supplies possibly reaching 22,580,000 bales and prompting continued curbs unless prices are forfeited.
Former president Herbert Hoover, turning 80, declared a war on Communism in a nationwide radio TV address from West Branch Iowa. He denounced Fifth Amendment protections for alleged spies and urged stripping voting or office rights from those who dodge the amendment while condemning bureaucrats socialists and intellectuals for spreading Marxist ideas. He warned of past administrations’ actions fueling a Soviet aligned world and blamed Tehran and Yalta diplomacy for curtailing American liberties.
The Tatum school system received delivery of a new flexible bus last week. The bus, used by major transportation firms, will support the school's program activities and features 39 reclining seats, special luggage compartments, and is painted in red and white with the school coyote emblem.
The Civic Projects Advisory Council plans a civilian defense program for Lovington. Harvey Markley was named to study national and state programs and craft Lovington specific recommendations. The group also aims to boost voter registration before the November 4 election with an October 4 registration deadline reminder.

Peace officers from DeBaca Curry Roosevelt Chaves Eddy and Lea counties attended a regional meeting of the New Mexico Sheriffs and Police Association at the Hobbs Police Academy in Air Base City. The gathering led by Roswell Police Chief L O Thompson ran from 10 a m to 4 p m with a noon barbecue lunch. Lovington Mayor Jack Underwood spoke on law enforcement and public opinion. Guy Shirley of the National Auto Theft Bureau urged stronger personnel to curb auto theft.
Tatum officials report the town airport is used regularly by oil field companies operating in the area. Crop dusters have not yet begun using the field.
Three Lea County boys return from service in the U S Navy. They are John Ray Bishop of Lovington Robert Melvin Miller of Hobbs and Melvin Travis Franks of Oil Center.
A small blaze at the Shade Western Lounge Tuesday night started from faulty wiring. The fire stayed outside the building wiring and caused only minimal damage.
The July sale of state leases on no restricted acreage drew 104 bids for 28 tracts totaling 23 395 acres. Humble Oil & Refining Co. paid the top price for Tract 21 in Roosevelt County, 320 acres for 4800 dollars. Four tracts received no bids and were sold afterward to C W Pederson of Albuquerque.

Thieves shattered a skylight and attic access to Shians Fine Jewelry at 217 W Broadway in Hobbs and stole rings and watches valued between 8000 and 10000 dollars plus three pen sets. The store manager Theron Horton estimated over 200 rings and watches were taken with a small safe likely picked. no forced entry found on the lock. Police and other agencies are reviewing clues and fingerprints as the investigation continues with no new developments announced.
Machinery moved to Saunders Road as construction begins. The road spans about 11 miles of rock and will be completed by joint efforts of the State Highway Department and the County road department. County equipment is at work laying the base for construction.
E S Walker announces two state lease sales for August. On Monday August 16 a special sale of 42 835 15 acres across 18 counties offers 36 non restricted tracts from 120 to 2648 acres. August 17 features a regular sale of restricted lands with 15 509 28 acres in 39 tracts across four counties offered sealed bid, plus 11 bids across three counties by oral bid totaling 2963 26 acres. Minimum bid for the San Juan County lot is 10 per acre.

The Tatum Parents and Teachers Association plans a barbecue at Tatum Schools on August 27 at 6 50 inviting patrons children teachers and all connected with the schools. The association provides meat others bring salads and side dishes.
President Eisenhower told a news conference that preventive war is unthinkable and impossible in the hydrogen bomb era. He also rejected General Mark Clark's call to break with Russia and reorganize the United Nations to oppose the Soviet Union.
Santa Fe New Mexico reduces highway fatality toll with NSC commendation. Ned Dearborn singles out Dona Ana Lea and Lincoln Counties for April efforts, while Joe Roach adds Union McKinley and Los Alamos Counties for recognition. April fatality rate dropped 40, from 305 projected deaths to the current low for four years.
The C. E. Duncan Produce Company began picking yesterday for green wraps and plans full harvesting by August 25 with Mexican contract labor. The first shipments go to southeastern markets and about 200 carloads are expected by season end, up from 65 last year.
President Eisenhower directed the justice department to seek a strike stopping injunction against CIO production workers at the Atomic Energy Plant in Paducah Kentucky. The strike was set for 8 A M Thursday at the Paducah Plant.
In Salem Massachusetts an 80 year old woman Mrs Mary Linehan delayed rescue by firefighters to ensure her pet cat was safe outside after a fire started in her apartment.
Pacific Fleet task force 12 brings 55 ships to Puget Sound for Seafair events in Seattle Tacoma Everett and Bellingham Washington. Enlisted seamen Joe A. Bayes and Luis E. Bayes of Oil Center New Mexico, sons of Mr and Mrs Joseph A Bayes, aboard USS Badoeng Strait participate in the Navy display and shore visits.
The 1954 Lea County Fair Catalogue is available for general distribution. Acting County Agent W. J. Rawlins announces copies can be obtained at the county agent's office in the Court House for those who have not received one.
In Stanfield Arizona three year old Bobby Holiday was seized from her bed by a man in a white shirt. She was later found wounded in a cotton camp cabin two miles away, after a statewide Pinal County search. Medical staff diagnosed injuries from the incident.
In Santa Fe a state teen association forms to assist authorities in reducing traffic fatalities. Invitations go to all New Mexico high schools to send two delegates to an Oct 1–2 meeting. Beth Gregory of Raton named temporary chair. Shelia Sorensen named secretary. vice presidents include Kyle Jonas Deming Macky Neely Carlsbad Richard Holder Lovington and Jimmy Gale Saunders Santa Fe.
Lovington details show the new high school nearly complete with rooms finished and minor repairs remaining. Registration for students begins Monday at the new site while the vocal training unit is due for completion by early September and the board reviewed preschool workshop plans and the year's program.
