Lovington School Enrollment Starts August 17

Lovington Public Schools announce enrollment for 1953 54 week of August 17 21 with detailed locations for grade level sign ups and special provisions for families outside city limits. The board led by J L Yarbro R D Lee John Easley Kyle Taylor and Hobdy Gann schedules multiple July meetings to advance construction of a new high school classroom building and upcoming shop music and industrial arts facilities.

Wind and hail hit Lea County cotton acres

Lea County cotton acreage stands around 45 000 to 50 000 acres after earlier estimates of 60 000. strong winds damaged red sand areas late to replant. Hail near Lovington destroyed much acreage. Some fields yield late or abandoned. Pests bite, but many farmers control worms and flea hoppers. First bale expected mid to late September.

Osborn Fisher Town Clerk reports July meter receipts totaling 1449 dollars. About 724.50 dollars goes to the meter firm and a similar amount stays with the town to cover maintenance costs.

Town of Lovington reports July receipts totaling 13 708 69 with expenses of 14 893 42. Itemized income includes taxes licenses permits fines and gas receipts while accounts payable list shows salaries police jail street and other municipal costs totaling 14 893 42.

Rhea M. De Olivera, Grand Master of the Masons of New Mexico, was guest speaker at a Friday night meeting. Past Grand Master Walter F. Edwards of Hobbs gave a brief talk. A buffet supper was served to 64 members and guests.

Aven Buried In Hobbs Police Officer Remembered

Hobbs memory service held Sunday for Patrolman Joe T. Aven Jr buried at Memory Gardens. Vaughn A. Reifel led the rites with Rev. LeRoy Sewell and Rev. Edward E. Hamilton assisting. Aven died after injuries from a Seminole Highway auto crash that killed Sgt. Jake Ramsey and three others. Griffin Funeral Home of Hobbs directed burial.

Lovington Town Trustees Postpone Meeting Again

The Lovington Town Trustees postponed their regular meeting for a second time citing unfinished preparations. Town Clerk Osborne Fisher said Friday's session was delayed because everything couldn't be ready and the meeting was moved to Monday night.

Tatum Pioneer Mary Ann Hickey Dies at 68

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ann Hickey 68 were held at the First Methodist Church in Tatum. A former pioneer who resided in Wilcox Arizona for 15 years, she died in Hobbs Hospital early Sunday, mother of Mrs. Lee Berryhill of Tatum.

Water Carnival and Fashion Show Set for Lovington

Lovington hosts a water carnival at the Country Club Pool on August 21 at 8 p.m. The event features a water pageant a beauty contest and fashion show with student performances and model entries from local businesses. Admission is 25 cents.

Miller Cafe Changes Hands to Wootens at Artesia Highway

Tommy and Mary Wooten purchase Miller's cafe on the Artesia Highway. The cafe is closed for remodeling and will reopen Monday August 17 offering 24 hour seven days a week service. The Wootens also run Tommy's Pit Bar BQ and will add Bar BQ and Mexican dishes. Mr Wooten is a longtime local, former member of the 200th Coast Artillery.

Town Prisoner Feed Bill Soars in July Report

Town feed costs rose in July while county costs fell. Mrs. Joe Price oversees town prisoner meals. July shows 373 days payable at $1.00 daily or $373, with 69.50 extra meals for workers. Total feed bill $422. Eleven were fined for drunken driving. A fuller report comes Friday in the Leader.

Oil Field Worker Dies At Brownfield From Rowan Drilling Injury

Eldon Baggett of Brownfield Texas died Saturday at 1 40 PM from injuries suffered while working for Rowan Drilling Co five miles east. Funeral services were held in Brownfield on Monday afternoon. No further details were released.
