Father Hugh Robkess of St. Helena's Church Hobbs has been moved to Carlsbad New Mexico. He received confirmation of the transfer last Saturday evening.
Elvin McAlister named principal of Monument School after consolidation with Hobbs Municipal School System. A Hobbs teaching staffer for two years, he directed choral music and taught biology, with seven years of experience. Native New Mexican born in Floyd, married with two children, they will move to Monument soon.
George Pope of Carlsbad visited Lovington and announced the new Cobb Department Store would open in Lovington in August. Pope, current manager in Carlsbad, seeks sales staff and invites applicants to leave names at the Leader office. He also seeks a two or three bedroom unfurnished rental.
Filings over the weekend were light with two suits since last Wednesday. Jewell Tea Co. sues Wallace Anderson and Earl Mannquist seeking $1000 damages from a car wreck. One quiet title suit filed. No divorces requested.
Superintendent reports show 642 professional staff not returning in September and 186 with training below standards. An additional 252 teachers will be hired to handle enrollment growth, predicting about 110 professional replacements or over twenty percent of the workforce for 1951 1952.
New Mexico retail activity overall edged up in May with gains in automotive, furniture, and hotels, while 16 counties saw declines from 2 to 31 percent. Lea County posted an 11 percent increase, as oil and gas exploration and building activity boosted regional trade amid drought and easing buyer resistance.
Funeral services were held at the Green Chapel in Hobbs for George Edwin Arnold 24 of Oil Center. He died in an explosion Friday injuring two others. Buried at Portales after services. Survivors include wife Nadine Arnold and two children Eddie and Beverly. Also listed are father Chas M Arnold and three brothers Alger Allison and Gerald of Sacramento, Calif, mother Dorothy McIntyre of Mesa Arizona, and wife’s father J P Turner of Portales. Two others injured in the blast C B Majors and John S Swinford are improving.
Pamela Crow was honored on her birthday with a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Crow. Guests included Larry Daniel George Johnston Terry Mahan Sharon and Kent Hayes Ruth Ann Marlowe Mike Cox Douglas Witherspoon Betty and Kay Sumruld. Birthday cake and soft drinks were served.
Records from Lea County Hospital note births from August 1 to August 5. Families named Gibbs Pagan Torrez Ault Daniels Longnecker Thornton Trachter welcomed sons and daughters with weights ranging from 6 to 9 pounds and ounces.
Mrs. Bill Wright of Lovington is slightly improved at Lea County Hospital after several days of serious illness. Ernest C. Young, father of Eldon and Maurice Young, is critically ill and rushed to the hospital. his family has been summoned. Mr. Young worked for his son Eldon at Young Motors in Hobbs.
In Omaha twelve former jurors eight men and four women have formed an informal juror club since completing their duty. One juror invited the others to a steak dinner at his home as a social gathering.
Elwood Bear Dink Logan, longtime West Texas and Eastern New Mexico resident and wagon boss for several ranches, dies at Lea County Hospital aged 91. Survived by four cousins and several in-law families. funeral held at Smith-Yarbro Chapel Lovington with burial at Lovington Cemetery.
Funeral services were conducted at First Methodist Church in Lamesa for Lovington resident Andrew B. Crow who died August 2 in a highway crash seven miles east of Sea Graves. He managed the Western Cotton Co gin in Lovington and leaves three sons Tommy Crow and A B Crow of Lamesa Edgar Crow in Korea and a daughter Mrs Bob Davis of San Francisco.
Attorney General J. Howard McGrath demands 39 alien communists helped by $111,000 bail in deportation hearings report by 2 p.m. Thursday. If they fail to appear, the government may cancel bail and re arrest them. All 39 are charged with Communist Party membership and subversive activity.
Norman Lane, returned from California to face hot check charges, will have a preliminary hearing on August 6 in Hobbs before Justices of the Peace Bob Bensing or Tom Finn. Lane, a piano player at Georges' nightclub, was charged with issuing several checks before leaving for California. He was arraigned last week and pleaded not guilty.
The preliminary hearing for Roy Vann on libel charges against Horace Burl Owens, a former sheriff, and two Hobbs businessmen, plus a charge of possessing fire crackers, is set for August 8 in Hobbs Municipal Court. D. D. Archer of Artesia represents Vann. a large crowd is expected.
Lea County will again be No 6 in license tag vending with no new plates expected this year. Motorists may receive only a gluey sticker to display on their windshield.
District Judge Ro C. Anderson celebrated his 32nd birthday last week with well wishes from colleagues. The event highlighted the judge's tenure and service.
Mr and Mrs Jean Ashmore return from a two week stay in California. Mrs Ashmore, a clerk in the County Clerk office, is expected to report for work on Monday.
Army Secretary Frank Pace Jr warned the Senate subcommittee that World War III could begin at any moment if the Soviets choose to attack. He cited potential triggers such as a Russian strike on Yugoslavia or Iran and noted other soft spots could touch off a conflict. Warren Austin cautioned that UN aid would come if Yugoslavia were attacked, though he doubted such an assault. A briefing on European military affairs was planned for a secret Senate session with Army Chief of Staff Lanotn Collins and Deputy Secretary of State George Perkins.
Belle Center Ohio postmaster Wiley K Connor resigns to enroll in a 26 month course at Embry Riddle school of aeronautics in Miami Florida to learn air mail operations.
Orville Russell's wife Ann increasingly pressed him about his body and fender repair trade. In self defense he taught her the craft and she now works beside him in the shop.
The New Mexico Quarterly celebrates 20 years with 1 543 book reviews 350 articles 250 stories and 550 poems. A 68 page Twentieth Anniversary Index compiling contributors and contents from 1931 to 1950 will be released July 30 by editor Dr George Arms. The index costs 1 25 for non subscribers and will be sent free to subscribers and libraries upon request.
The 4791 grade 1-8 teachers averaged 102 319 daily attendees or 26 9 pupils per teacher while 1530 high school teachers averaged 15 9 pupils per teacher. The overall state ratio was 23 8. Continental US 1947 48 averaged 24 3 with 13 2 in South Dakota and 29 8 in North Carolina.
Red Cross announces a flood relief drive around August 15 to raise funds for Kansas City area floods. North Lea County quota is 390 dollars with donations requested at Lender office Lea County State Bank or to James Hobbs. South Lea County aims for 558 dollars as its share of the disaster fund.
Funeral services will be Wednesday morning at 10 o clock at the First Methodist Church in Hobbs for Mrs Nell W Feemster who died August 6 at Lea County Hospital. Surviving are two daughters one son a sister and brothers eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Burial will be in Prairie Haven Cemetery with Rev C E Jameson officiating. Mrs Jarboe lives at 103 Green Acres where she is an automobile tag license vendor.
Friends and family report Boon Hardin improving after a serious pneumonia attack in Shawnee Oklahoma. He was rushed to a hospital and expected to return to his Kickapoo Hotel rooms if condition continues to improve. At his bedside were his son and family from Wichita Falls Texas and Lovington relatives with several local friends.
Hobbs Chamber of Commerce undertakes an industrial survey of Hobbs and surrounding territory. The study, compiled under Dr. R. T. Klemme of Oklahoma University, will cover housing labor and bread prices compared with other towns and be presented as a book on November 1.
Ed Carr Lovington policeman is reported to be recovering from an operation at Lubbock Memorial Hospital He entered the hospital for surgery last Friday morning.

Mrs. Gordon Cone is shaken after her car struck her 3 year old daughter Cathy. The child suffered minor bruises and scratches but both mother and daughter are recovering at home with no serious injuries reported.
