Lovington Schools unveil the 1954 55 administrative team led by Supt. H C Pannell in his 17th year. Roy L. Jones becomes Administrative Assistant over Special Services and transportation as 21 bus lines and cafeterias serving 1 000 daily are restructured. Teachers assigned across Llano Jefferson Avenue Central Elementary and Junior High with new High School Building sections. calendar lists August registrations through May exams and holidays including Labor Day Thanksgiving Christmas and Washington’s Birthday.
The Lovington Board of Education directs the district’s growth and educational system. Members J L Yarbro R D Lee John Easley Kyle Taylor and Hodby Gann serve as leaders with John Easley as Vice President and Hodby Gann as Clerk. The board meets monthly, with over 20 meetings held in the year ending June 30 to handle construction, finance, policies, and operations.
The Lovington Lions Club faces the Jaycees Monday night in the second game of a town championship series at Lions Park. Baseball experts call it the most evenly matched game, set for 7 30 p m. The winner advances to face the Kiwanis Club next Saturday August 7 in a double header for the title.
George W. Roberts of Eunice was found dead in his home from a self inflicted gunshot. A coroner jury ruled death due to self inflicted wounds with a prior murder charge pending against him. Graveside services were held Friday at Eunice Cemetery. Survivors include four children and two sisters.
The district invites the public to visit all school buildings on Sunday afternoon September 5 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. including the new high school units. Teachers will be on hand to answer questions and show you around. Existing buildings have been refinished for the new term.
The report states total cost 591,730.90 with per student costs of 165 excluding transportation and 187 including transport. Excluding transport the cost per ADA is 222 and including transport the cost per ADA is 251.
Rev and Mrs C D Faulkner and their children Douglas Ray and Charlotte returned Thursday from a vacation in Arkansas.
The Tatum school facilities are polished and prepared for the August 30 start. Superintendent W. D. Caster says maintenance is nearly finished with renova tions, new playground gear added, and replaced equipment. New staff include seven teachers and H. K. Preston as high school principal, with a total enrollment anticipated near 600.
Moss Lewis Ezra, 73, freed on molesting a nine year old after an informal hearing and lack of criminal intent was found by the District Attorney. Welfare review found no prior offenses and his granddaughter testified no improper advances. Moss relinquished custody to the state until a court rules otherwise.
Memphis resident Sugart Yer Ian explains his unusual given name is formed from two names Gene and Arthur. He notes local confusion but says the choice reflects family heritage and personal meaning.
William Duncan Rains 28 or 29 of Hobbs was fatally electrocuted Friday at 11 00 A M while working on a pole near Jefferson and Lincoln streets. He lived with his parents at 507 East Alston and was a World War II veteran and a lineman for New Mexico Power. Funeral services are pending at Griffin Funeral Home Hobbs.
R C Hayes former deputy sheriff and ex patrolman was appointed police in Eunice starting August 1. He had earlier served as radio operator under Sheriff Charlie Trimble and faced a firing during Sheriff Mec Adoo selection after Trimble’s resignation. The decision sparked loud protests in Eunice.
W D Mayben of Lovington died Monday evening in Lubbock Texas at his daughter’s home. He would have been 88 on August 22. Funeral services were held July 29 in Canyon Texas with Masonic rites at the graveside. He leaves three daughters two sons two sisters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
M. J. Barlow of Robert E. Schweser & Co., a municipal bond firm in Omaha, told last Wednesday that Eunice is an up and coming city and might surpass Lovington, urging Lovington to wake up.
The City of Eunice purchased 240 acres of surface land from Jake Fort and the estate of Horace Burl Owens for 31 597 paid from a 35 000 bond issue for a water project. The sale includes a specific land description in Township 20 South Range 38 East and follows Owens's death leaving his estate to his widow and four children. Groundwater rights not included. A district court sale order is sought as water needs prompt a line installation within 90 days, about 11 miles from Eunice city limits.
