Benson Denounces Flexible Supports Not Cutting Farm Income

Agriculture Secretary Benson testified before the Senate Agriculture Committee on proposed farm programs. He warned that extending high price supports could endanger future farm policy while explaining set aside plans would shift support levels for wheat, corn, cotton, rice, tobacco, and peanuts under Senate and House versions, with varying parity percentages.

Fire Exhr guched At Wialenaar

A oil well fire in Mallamar area is extinguished after Lovington and Tatum firefighters respond to a Penrose Lease incident 21 miles north of Mallamar. The Cactus Drilling Company rig burns its flooring. the well is cut off with no injuries. Sheriff Jewell McAdoo, James Robinson, and Deputy Pierce responded.

Portales Sheriff Detains Wanted Men in Lea County

Sheriff Ping Evetts found Curtis Ellwich and George Harper in the Tatum jail. They were wanted on forgery charges and held for investigation after Deputy Pierce and Tatum police captured them on drunkenness charges.

Lea County waits as New Mexico primary races narrow

In Lea County four days remain before the New Mexico Democratic and Republican primaries. Sheriff leads his challenger though money is scarce. Eunice and Eunice area races heat up with Faugh Bowden vs G F Snell for justice of the peace. County races include Hobby Gann vs Neil BE Jones for district 1 commissioner and Mrs Dennis Ashmore challenging John Love for county clerk.

Clark Remains Return to Plainview for Interment

The body of Mrs. Eula Nevada Clark, 73, was taken to Lemons Funeral Home in Plainview Texas for services on Wednesday. A Plainview coach delivered the remains to her former home after she died April 27 1954 at Lea County Hospital. Survivors include daughter Mrs. Bertha Oglesby of Lovington.

KHOB Name New Hobbs Radio Station

Construction starts immediately on KHOB new Hobbs radio station to be built on land owned by Joe E Brown and leased to Lloyd Hawkins of Tucumcari. Hawkins aims for on air within 60 days after building begins. George Graves the Hobbs architect designed the 1000 watt station plan.

Lovington police report a Sunday night robbery at Herbs Drive In. A cigarette machine and juke box cash register were taken along with an estimated 240 dollars.

Fithian Hearing Set For June 28

Albuquerque district judge schedules June 28 hearing on Taylor Fithian s appeal from a land office ruling canceling his 180 acre state land purchase. Former Democratic party treasurer Fithian challenged land commissioner E S Walker s appraisal as too low and improvements as overvalued. Judge Edwin L Swope says trial will be on the transcript with possible new testimony.

Bill to finance reservoirs for recreation and irrigation

United Press reports Congress may consider a measure to provide long term loans to communities building reservoirs for recreation or irrigation. Hearing set in Washington next week with John Buss of the New Mexico Interstate Streams Commission attending. The bill could allow the state to sponsor multiple small projects with repayment as feasible.

Three Nile Five Injured in Crase Near Tatum

A county traffic death toll rose to five after a two car crash five miles north of Tatum Tuesday morning. Killed were Gerald T. Webb 35 of Hobbs D R Downing 20 and Teddy J Martin 24 of Tatum. All three were employees of Southeastern Drilling Co.

Tragic Tuesday auto wreck north of Tatum led to burials in Texas and Louisiana. Gerald T Webb 36, of Odessa died. services planned in Halleyville Alabama and Monahans Texas. Car accident near Lea Theatre causes minor paint damage

A slight collision occurred near the Lea Theatre on Tuesday when two cars halted at a red light. A woman's foot slipped, scratching the other vehicle. no charges were filed.
